Application filed January 5i, 1915. Serial No. 602.
f intended for use with an outer or dress shirt,
yet it is also adapted for combination suits by the shoulder portions of the shirt, An-
other object is to construct the nether garment so that the upward pull of the supports will take up and prevent sagging in the center of the waist band. A further purpose is to provide a combined garment Jin which the connections between upper and lowerportions mutually hold each other in proper position and are entirely concealed so that there are no unsightly tabs, straps or other supports, thereby particularly adapting the garment for athletic purposes and for use when the coat and vest are not\worn.
ln the drawings'forming a part of the specification, Figures 1 and Ltare perspective views of a combined garment embodying my invention; Fig. 2, is an enlarged detail showing one form of the connecting supports; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the nether garment portion from the rear and partly broken away to show a manner of reinforcing the side seams; and Figs. 5 and 6 are patterns of the nether garment.
rThe shirt or upper garment portion 1 is illustrated in the form of a coat-type but it is evident that the other common form which opens in the rear may be used. I believe the strain or pull should `be transmitted to the parts adjacent the shoulders and l have therefore provided the connecting and supporting members shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, in the form of straps 7 separate from the garment, which may be secured only at the top at 8, and unattached throughout the' intermediate portion, so that they may swing inward toward the body, free from the adjacent portion of' the shirt and to adapt themselves to the pull of the nether garment portion 3. rli`his supporting member 7 remains entirely concealed so that the garment is not disfigured by any exposed tabs or straps and the outer form ofthe shirt may conform to the usual shape having the ordinary skirt ortion which passes down into the trousers, thus forming a neat appearance at the waist. This garment is, therefore, adapted for athletic and other uses in which no outer coat and vestv are worn. Moreover the downward pull of the nether garment or drawers 3, upon the supporting connecting members 7, assists in maintaining the shirt in normal position during the various movements of the body.
rlhe supporting strapsl 8, may be sewed or-y otherwise fastened at their upper ends to the inside of the shirt to the under-arm seams and. preferably near the top thereof so as to be adjacent the parts which extend over the'shoulders, thereby transmitting the pull to the shoulders, which l have found to be preferable. Each strap is provided with a series of alined button holes 9. rllhe nether garment is provided at eachside with a button 5, which may be a detachable-stud if desired, and which is adapted to,enter any of the series of button-holes to properly connectl the upper and lower garment portions.
While the nether portion may be the usual form, l prefer to construct it so that the pull on the supports 7, will, cause the top or waist band to tend to straighten, and thereby raise the center, drawing it up against the body. l accomplish this by making each leg part substantially as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, representing the front and rear patterns respectively, a b being the outer side, and c the inner leg-seam. The dotted lines show the position caused by the pull of the supports.
By referring to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, it will be seen that the top of the nether garment normally slopes downwardly at the center of the top margin or waist band. rll`he area of the top opening is slightly larger than the measurement around the hips of the wearer, so that the garment may be put on without requiring the usual front Hap opening. If desireda -flyppening 10 may be provided. While the garment is being drawn over the hips, the top opening is more or less circular, the central part dipping or sagging as shown in whole lines. When. however, the straps 7 are fastened to the buttons 5, the pull at each side not only pulls upwardly but also stretches the waist band outwardly,
bringing the center in against the body and raising the center of the waist bandas indlcated by dotted lines in Figs. 4; and 5. This 'is due to the fact that the pull from the shoulders through the straps l7, has an outward horizontal component as well as the vertical component or main pull and l have` constructed the garment to utilize this horizontal component. The garment not 'only fits the body snugly and comfortably but is more simple in construction than the usual nether garment.
ln Fig. 3, I have shown at 12, a reinforcement of the side seams which is sometimes desirable, especially in garments for athletes which are subjected to sudden strains.
l claim l. A two-piece garment' having a connect! ing means for th e upper and lower garment members, comprising a supporting'member secured to the upper garment or shirt adj acent to the under-arm seam thereof, said supporting member being provided with a series of longitudinally alined button-holes and extending adjacent said seam entirely with- 1n said upper garment but free from said garment throughout the length of said series.
of button-lholes, and a complementary fastening means carried by the lower garment and adapted to register with one of said buttonh oles when the garments are in wearing position. v
2. A two-piece garment, comprising shirt and netherV portions, the latter having continuous closed front and rear parts with a waist band lowest at the center at the front and the back and fastening means at each side, a supporting member secured to the inside ofthe upper garment adjacent the under-arm'seam and having a series of longitudinally alined button-holes adapted to cooperate with the fastening meansv on the nether portion when the parts are in wear-`
