Application led April 7, 1917. Serial No. 160,381.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BoHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented. a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-LockingMechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in door locking mechanism.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, ecient device for securely locking a. sliding door in closed position, which device includes means for automatically retaining the locking bolt in 0perative position.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of a door of a freight car and adjacent members, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken substantiallyv on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View, taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. l.
The improvement is shown in connection with a freight car of the type disclosed in my application No. 39,288, filed July 12, 1915, for improvement in freight cars.
The door proper, of which only a portion is shown in the drawing, comprises a sheet of steel 10 riveted or otherwise suitably secured to a rectangular framework of which the portion 11 shown in the drawing comprises one side at the advance edge of the door. The door is limited in its closing movements by engagement with a bracket or stop l2 secured to the side post 13 of the car door opening. As clearly shown in Fig. 4,
said bracket 12 is provided with a horizontal slot 14 open at. its outer end, and at its inner end said slot 14 is enlarged to form two opposed quadrant recesses 15-15. Mounted onthe door is an elongated bolt or latch supporting plate 16 having out-turned ends 17-17 which form bearings for a rotatable latch or locking bolt 18. The bolt 18 is provided with a nut 19 at one end and at its other end with a right-angled extension or operating handle 20. In the angle formed between the handle 20 and the main or body portion of the bolt, the rod is flattened out, as indicated at 21, in a plane parallel with the plane located bv the handle and body portions of the bolt.
In closing the door, the latter is brought up against the stop 12 at which time the handle 20 of the locking bolt is in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4 so that the flattened portion 21 of the locking bolt will readily slide through the slot 14 in the stop 12. hen the door has been fully closed, the handle 20 is swung downwardly to the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 4, which is permissible on account of the quadrant-shaped portions 15-15 of the slot in the stop bracket 12. This rotating movement cf the locking bolt is limited by shoulders 22--22 on the bracket 12 and will effectively and positively prevent the door from swinging outwardly.
In order to hold the locking bolt in its opera-tive position, the bracket 12 is preferably provided with an oil-set cam 23 in the position indicated in Fig. 3 so that, as the handle 20 is being swung downwardly to vertical position, it will ride over said cam and spring into position just beyond the high point thereof, as indicated in` Fig. 3, whereby the handle will be held in this position and prevented from accidental disengagement. To prevent tampering with the door locking mechanism while the car is in transit, the handle. 2O is slotted, as indicated at 24. and the stop bracket 12 similarly slotted, as indicated at 25, to receive the usual lead seal.
The arrangement above described is simple, can be cheaply manufactured and easily applied and effectively locks the door both against sliding movement and outward swinging movement.
I claim:
1. In a locking mechanism for sliding doors, the combination with a rotatable locking bar adapted to be mounted on the door and to extend in a horizontal position, said bar having a flattened portion at its forward end, means on said bar for rotatingthe latter, and a stop member against which the door is adapted to abut in closed position, said stop member having a slot into which said flattened portion of the bar is adapted to slide when the door is moved to clos'ed position, said stop member having a cam thereon adapted to retain the bar in locked position.

adapted to be rotatably mounted on the door and having a right-angled extension at one end thereof forming an operating handle, said bar having a flattened portion at the angle between the handle and-main portion of the bar, and a stop for the door, said stop having a horizontally extending slot into Which said fiattened portion of the bar .is adapted to enter While the door is being moved to closed position `and While said handle extends perpendicularly from the door, said slot permitting partial rotation of said flattened portion therein with said handle on the side of the stop remote from l the door, said stop having integral means with which said handle is adapted to engage when the locking bar is moved to operative position to retain the bar in operative position. r
