INVENTOR WXTNESSES ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLEY BUBB, 0F WOODWABID, OKLAHOMA.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 23, 1918.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEY BUBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodward, in the county of Woodward and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed wrench especially designed for use in connection with nuts of exhaust manifolds of internal combustion engines.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character constructed so that the position thereof need not be changed for either tightening or loosening the nut.
Another object is to provide a wrench having a reversible handle to adapt it for use with nuts for all kinds of exhausts.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with a part of th handle broken off,
Fig. 4 is a front end View,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the stationary member or head, and
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the slide.
In the embodiment illustrated, a semi-circular stationary member 1 is shown carried by a shank 2, which is enlarged to form laterally extending wings 3, said wings being spaced from the rear edge of the semi-circular member 1 a suflicient distance to form guideways 4 for the member hereinafter to be described. The wings 3 are apertured as shown at 5 for the reception of bolts 6 which are employed for connecting the movable jaws or dogs 10 and 11 to the fixed or stationary head member.
The head member has a rearwardly ex- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing at an oblique angle to the socket member 9 and the handle is designed to be reversed on the shank 7 to adapt the wrench for use with various kinds of exhausts, some .of which have nuts with the calks on one end, while others have them on the reverse end, and by making this handle changeable, the wrench may be used with all kinds of nuts.
The movable jaws or dogs 10 and 11 have laterally extending gripping faces 12 at their free outer ends and their inner ends are provided with inwardly and laterally extending fingers 13 which are rounded and on which is mounted a coiled push spring 14 which normally exerts its tension to force the gripping ends of the jaws toward each other.
Mounted on the outer faces of the jaws 10 and 11 is a plate 15 through which the bolts 6 pass and which has at its front end laterally extending arms 16 on its side edges, said arms being bent at right angles in the direction toward the jaws to form stops 17 for limiting the outward movement of the jaws, said stops being positioned to engage the outer side edges of said jaws 10 and 11 I as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.
An adjustable slide 18 is shown in the form of a U-shaped member, the cross bar of which has a slot 19 extending longitudinally thereof through which a bolt 21 is designed to extend, the legs 20 being designed to extend through the recesses 4 formed between the member 1 and the wings 3 and to work against the front edges of said wings which constitute a portion of the head member, said head member being substantially T-shaped in form, the shank 7 forming the stem thereof and the wings 3 its head. The ends of the cross bar of the slide 18 are designed to engage the inner edges or opposed faces of the jaws 10 and 11 as is shown clearly in Fig. 3, and a wing nut 22 is carried by the bolt 21 and is designed to be tightened for positioning the slide so that either one or the other of the jaws 10 or 11 may be held in working position. When these jaws are engaged with a nut, the wrench may be used to either tighten or loosen the nut by changing the position of the dogs, that is, when the nut is to be tightened, one of the dogs is loosened, and the other tightened, and when the nut is to be loosened, the opposite dog is brought into operation, and this is accomplished simply by loosening the wing nut 22 and adjusting the slide 18.
From the above description it will be obvious that this wrench may be used for nuts on all kinds of manifolds, the reversibility of the handle 9 adapting it for such uses.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form or my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, at ((5., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,:
1. A wrench comprising a head, a pair of dogs fulcrumed thereon intermediately of their ends, a push spring disposed between said dogs at the inner side of their fulcrums, and an adjustable slide mounted between them on the other side of their fulcrums, said slide being slotted longitudinally, and a locking element operable in the slot of said slide.
2. A wrench comprising a head, a pair of dogs fulcrumed thereon intermediately of their ends, a push spring disposed between said dogs at the inner side of their fulcrums, and an adjustable slide mounted between them on the other side of their fulcrums, said slide being U-shaped with its cross bar disposed between said dogs and slotted longitudinally to receive a locking element.
, 3. A wrench comprising a head, a pair of dogs fulcrumed thereon intermediately of their ends, a push spring disposed between said dogs at the inner side of their tulcrums, an adjustable slide mounted between them on the other side of their tul crums, a. plate engaging the outer faces of said dogs and having means for limiting their outward movement.
4. In a spanner wrench, a T-shaped head having a U-shaped member carried thereby on the end opposite its shank with a space between it and the head of the T, a plate, a pair of dogs fulcrumed between said head and plate, and an adjustable slide located between said dogs, said slide having legs extending through the space between said head and U-shaped member.
5. In a spanner wrench, a T-shaped head having a U-shaped member carried thereby on the end opposite its shank with a space between it and the head of the T, a plate, a pair of dogs fulcrumed between said head and plate, an adjustable slide located between said dogs, said slide having legs extending through the space between said head and U-shaped member, and a handle having a socket to receive the shank of said T-shaped head and detachably connected therewith.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
