WINDOW CLEANING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 18. I918.

WINDUW-GLEANING' DJEVTGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 191,
Application filed May 18, isia Seria11t'o.235,332.
' between suitable weather strips, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described.
The objects of my improvement are:
First: To provide a means whereby the outer side of window panes may be effectively cleaned by a person located inside of the room, without leaning out of the window.
Second: To have said window cleaning means readily applicable to windows of various sizes, and
Third: To have said means simple, durable and inexpensive.
1 attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sec tion on the line lE-JF of Fig. 5; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line (3-D of 1 i 4, looking toward the left; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line C]D of Fig. 4 looking toward the right; Fig. 4 is a plan or top view of my window cleaningdevice, and Fig. 5 isa horizontal section on the line 3-13 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals and letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
11 is one of the two vertical hollow legs of a tl-shaped member, 11 is the other hollow leg, and 18 is the curved hollow branch connecting said legs 11 andll The leg 11 has a slot 12 on the right side thereof and the leg 11 has a slot 13 on the right side thereof.
15 and 14 are reinforcements for said legs 11 and 11* respectively which reinforcements are shown as hollow in the drawings, but which may also be solid, if desired, and they may have any convenient shape.
Said legs 11 and 11* and said reinforcements 15 and 14 are shown in Fig. 1 as plugged up at their upper ends by the stop pieces 22, 20, 21 and 19 respectively.
16 is a flexible strip of metal shown as inclosed by said legs 11, '11 and branch 18; said strip 16 has connected theret at one end thereof the handle 33, which is secured thereto by-means of screws 32 passing through said slot 12 and adapted to be moved therealong.
The washers 31 are interposed between said strip 16 and the front wall of said leg 11 inside thereof to prevent the jamming of said strip 1.6 against said front wall.
By means of said handle 33 said strip may have a reciprocating motion imparted thereto inside of said U-shaped member 1118-11*.
To the other end of said strip 16 is secured the carrier plate 24 and the middle portion of a plate spring 26 by means of the set screw 26*; the washer 26 is employed for properly spacing said strip 16 from the front wall of said leg 11.
'Said carrier plate 24 is provided with rollers 24", which are shown as placed in contact with the front wall of said leg' 11 to facilitate the motion of said carrier plate thereon,.and the lugs 24 adapted to slide between the guides 25, which are shown as made in one with the box 27, which is secured to the plate 28, hereinafter described. Said box 27 incloses the ends of said spring 26, which are bent over at an angle of 180 degrees and secured to the back wall of said box 27 inside thereof.
The plate 28 has a depression on the right side thereof, which is shown as filled with a padof cotton 29 or any other fibrous material, and a mop 30 may be secured over the edges of said plate 28 and on the face of said pad 29 in contact with the glass pane 34 of the window sash 35.
1t isevident that said tl-shaped member 11--1811 may he slipped over any window sash or pair of window sashes by a personsituated inside of the room, and have .the plate 28 with the pad 29 and mop 30 brought into contact with the exterior side of the I pane 34, and by moving said handle 33 up and down, to have said exterior side of said pane efiectively cleaned without having to lean out of the window. Said spring 26v serves to press said plate 28 with said mop dow cleaning device and in the details thereof without departing from the main scope of my invention.
I do not therefore restrict myself to the details as shown in the drawings, but I intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably obvious modifications thereof. a
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A window cleaning device comprising a hollow U-shaped member, a flexible strip inclosed by said member and adapted to be moved therein, a slot in each of the two legs of said member, a handle connected to said strip at one end thereof by means passing through the slot in one of said legs and adapted to move therein, a. carrier plate connected to said strip at the other. end
thereof by means passing through the slot in the other of said legs and adapted to move therein, a cleaning plate adapted to be applied for cleaning the panes of window sashes, a spring connecting said cleaning plate to said carrier plate, rollers situated in grooves in said carrier plate in contact with said other leg and guides for said carrier plate connected to said cleaning plate.
'2. A window cleaning device comprising a hollow U-shaped member, a flexible strip inclosed by said member and adapted to be moved therein, a slot in each of the legs of said member, a means for moving said strip connected at one end thereof by means passing through the slot in one of said legs and adapted to move therein, a carrier plate connected to said strip at the other end thereof by means passing through the slot in the other of said legs and adapted to move therein, a cleaning plate for window panea spring, connecting said cleaning plate to said carrier plate and guides for said carrier plate secured to said cleaning plate.
3. A window cleaning device comprising a hollow U-shaped member, a flexible strip inclosed by said member and adapted to be moved therein, a slot in each of the legs of said member, a means for moving said strip, connected at one end thereof by means passing through the slot in one of said legs and
