T0 all whom t may concern jBe it known that I, DANIEL ZA'rzKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State otMichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Molds, of which the following i is a specication.
The mold which isthe subject matter of the present application for patentis designed for molding building blocks' of concrete or analogous-material, and more particularly blocks of this kind which are iormed with an opening to provide Van air space in the wall constructed of such blocks.
Theinv'ention has for its object to provide a simple, and ehcintmold for blocks of the kind stated, together with novel and improved means for forming the opening in the block.
I hel object stated isattained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood. reference is had to the accompanying Y drawings, forming a part of this speciiication.

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line H of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing a core inserted into the mold;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the block which the mold is designed to form, and
Fig. 7 is a central longitudinal section of said block.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the block to be molded is shown at 5, the same being rectangular in contour and having a longitudinal horizontal opening 6 extending from one end of the block to the other. The ends of the block, above the opening, have recesses 7 to facilitate handling. Figs. 6 and 7L clearly illustrate the block.
The mold for the hereinbefore described block is a boX having sides 8, a bottom 9 and a top 10. The sides and bottom are rigidly connected in any suitable manner, and the top is separate so that it may be removed, it being put in place after the mold is filled and pressed down by suitable means to compress the concrete or other material in the mold to a Zcertain extent, after which a core block is forced. through to complete the tamping. The bottom 9 and the top 10 carry core blocks l1 for forming the recesses 7.
rlhe mold box is also provided with end walls 12 having vertical hinge connections 13 with one of the side walls 8, and secured to the opposite side wall by a suitable latch 11.
Each end wall 12 supports a pair of sliding doors 15 positioned one above the other, the wall having guides 16 in which the vertical edges of the doors seat. These doors separate vertically to open, and they are of thesame width as that of the opening 6 in the vblock 5. The doors are held normally closed by contracting coil springs 17, and when closed the inner edges of the doors are slightly spaced, these edges carrying horizontally positioned rollers 18 to Vfacilitate the insertion of a core bar 19 by which the opening '6 is formed.
The core bar 19 is advanced horizontally VAbetween the rollers 18 at one end of the mold, and upon continuing its advance, the doors 15 separate to allow the bar to be passed through the mold. The entrance end 0f the core bar is pointed and when the stroke is iinished theJ pointed end of the bar has entered between the rollers at the farther end of the mold, thereby spreading the doors at this end, after which the core bar is withdrawn to the end it entered. The core bar is operated by any suitable power means and as it is forced through the material in the mold, it forms the opening 6. The nature of the material under pressure is such that it remains compressed, So that when the core bar is withdrawn, the opening 6 will remain and not diminish in size. The core bar being pointed, it compresses the material as it is't'orced through the same, and the sliding doors prevent the material from being pushed out. the springs keeping them close to the core bar. It will be understood, of course, that the4 end walls 12 have openings 20 to accommodate the core bar 19, and after the block 5 is nished these walls are swung open and the top 10 is taken oii for removal of the block from the mold.
