FOOT-OPERATED DOOR-OPENER.
clare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in foot operable devices for opening doors, and has for its primary object to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which is mounted entirely upon the frame of the door.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character embodying means for retracting the spring actuated bolt of the ordinary types of door locks and thereby facilitate unlocking of the doOr without the use of the hands.
. Another object is the provision of means for automatically imparting an additional opening movement to the door subsequent to the release of the latter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevation of a door and door frame, illustrating the improved door opener applied thereto,
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the lower portion of the door frame, illustrating the foot operable pedal,
Fig. 3 represents a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: represents a fragmentary side elevation of the interior of the door frame,
Fig. 5 represents a detail sectional view through the door and door frame, partly broken away, illustrating the opener,
Fig. 6 represents a detail sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5,
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a door frame of the usual or any preferred Specification of Letters Patent.
construction in which is hingedly mounted a door 6 adapted to swing to open position 111 the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3. The door 6 is provided with the usual type of lock including the spring actuated latch 7 operable by the knob 8 and adapted to en gage in a recess 9 formed in a keeper plate 10 secured to the door frame 5.
In carrying out my invention I aperture the inner portion of the door frame 5 in line with the recess or opening 9 in the keeper plate 10, as indicated at 12, and slidably mount a block 13 behind the opening 12 upon a guide 14:. The block 13 is adapted to be moved outwardly through the opening 12 to engage and retract the bolt 7 of the door lock to release the latter. The block 13 is normally retained in retracted position by the tension of a spring 15 and is adapted to be moved outwardly to engage the bolt 7 by a curved arm 16 carried by a shaft 17 rotatably mounted in bearings 18 secured to the side members of the door frame 5. The ends of the shaft 17 project outwardly of the door frame 5 and are connected with arms 19, which, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, are arranged upon opposite sides of the door 6, whereby the shaft 17 may be actuated from either side.
Vertically movable pedals or platforms 20 are slidably mounted in guides 21 at tached to the lower portion of the door frame 5 on oppositesides of the door 6 and are connected with the free ends of the crank arms 19 by connecting rods 22.
The upper portion of the plate 10 is formed with a horizontal slot 23, in which is slidably confined a plunger 24:, which is disposed in the path of and adapted to be engaged and moved inwardly during the closing movement of the door 6. A spring 25 is arranged between one end of the slot 23 and the plunger 24, and the tension thereof normally tends to move the plunger 24 in the direction of the opening movement of the door 6.
In use, the door may be opened and closed in the usual manner by means of the knob 8, but, when desired, the door may be opened by pressing downwardly upon either of the pedals 20, thus oscillating the shaft 17 and causing the block 13 to be moved outwardly through the opening 12 and engage and retract the bolt 7 WVhen the door is released, subsequent to the re- Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed June 9, 1916. Serial No. 102,727.
traction of the bolt 7, tension of the spring 25 exerted upon the plunger 2% imparts an initial opening movement to the door.
What I claim is:
The combination with a hinged door, a door frame, and an ordinary spring-controlled knob-operated latching bolt for said door, of an angled supporting guide positioned Within said frame, a block slidably carried by said guide and alining With said latching bolt, said guide provided with an elongated slot, a set screw carried by said block and riding in said slot for guiding and limiting the movement or said block, a spring connected to said block to normally hold it in retracted position, said block provided With an opening near its inner end, a shaft rotatably carried by said frame, an arm carried by said shaft and engaging in the opening in said block to pro ject the block upon rotation of the shaft in a projecting direction, and a foot operated rod connected to said shaft for operating the same. A
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
