E. l. DODDS.
STAY BOLT FOR BOILERS.

W NESSES STATE$ PATENT @FFIQE.
ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT FOB BOILERS.
Application filed November 30, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolts for Boilers; and I do her eby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in stay bolts for boilers, the object being to provide a bolt the shank of which will be yielding or flexible so that it may accommodate itself to the unequal movements of the two sheets to which it is secured, without impairing its efliciency to withstand longitudinal stresses to which it may be sub-- jected when applying it to the boiler sheets, or when the boiler is in use.
\Vith this object in view my invention consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly in section of a bolt blank embodying my invention; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are views in section respectively on the lines a-a; Z2-b and 0-0 of Fig. 1 of the same, and Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the complete bolt.
In the manufacture of the bolt, a bar of stay bolt metal preferably. cylindrical is subjected to an upsetting heat and swaged between dies or other suitable tools to produce the reduced shank 1 and the enlarged heads 2 and 3. During the operation of swaging, or before or after the same, the shank of the tool is slotted as at 4, the slots extending all the way through the shank at the center thereof as shown in Fig. 1, but stopping short of the center adjacent the two heads, thus having the webs 5 integral with the two heads and also integral with the shank, at the two ends of the slot. The shank is also provided as at 6, with a slot or slots at right angles to the slot 4, the said slot 6 stopping short of the slot 4: at the center, so that there Specification of Letters Patent.

willnot be any communication with the latter lntermediate the adjacent ends of webs 5, but penetrating and passing through the webs 5, so that said slot 6 is continuous through the shank at the ends of the latter, but stop short of the center intermediate the end webs. Fig. 2 which is a section on line a a taken through the center of the shank shows the slot 4; extending through the shank and the slot 6 at right angles thereto stopping short of the center. Fig. 3 which 1s a section on line b b of Fig. 1, shows both slots 4: and (3 closed by the web, and Fig. 4 which is a. section on the line a 0, shows the slots 4 closed at the center by the web 5 and the slots 6 passing through the web.
The slotting is done by piercing rather than punching, so that there is no loss of metal in the shank, consequently the capacity of the shank for endwise stresses is not weakened, but simply broken up into sections which renders it flexible throughout its length so that it may accommodate itself to the unequal movements of the two sheets to which it is attached. As the side walls caused by slotting are tied together by the webs, there can be no buckling or bending the shank due to endwise stresses either pulling or compressive. After the bolt blank has been slotted the heads are formed, and the shank is twisted about 180; the heads threaded and the tell tale 7 bored in the outer head 2.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture a stay bolt having a head and a shank, the latter having slots at right angles to each other, one of which passes through the shank inten mediate the ends of the latter and part way through at both sides adjacent said ends, and the other passes through the shank and both ends and part way through from both sides at the center.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a stay bolt having a shank and heads integral with the shank at the ends of the latter the shank having two slots at an angle to each other In testimony whereof, I have. signed this speclficatlon 1n the presence of two SUbSClliih lng Witnesses.
one of which passes through the shank intermediate its ends, and part Way through at both sides adjacent said ends, and the other passes through the shank at both ends, and part way through from both sides at the center, the said shank being twisted and the heads threaded.
