l/VYf/VTORS- (@7270 C/Wcaugmw 4 TTORNEYS CHARLES DE LANCEY ALLEN AND JOHN CLIFFORD MAUGANS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID MAUGANS ASSIGNOB '10 'SA ID ALLEN.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Application filed December as, 1917.
ALLEN and JOHN CLIFFORD MAUGANS, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Pencil- Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in v1ew are: To provide a reservoir for the dust and other waste produced when sharpening a pencll; to provide a fixture havingrenewable sharpening exposed surfaces; to furnish 111 a single apparatus, a plurality of sharpening surfaces; to furnish an. apparatus Wlth sharpening members relatively graduated as to rapldlty of operation; and to simplifyand reduce the cost of construction.
Drawings Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section showing a fragment of the apparatus, the sectlon bemg taken as on the line 3-3 in Flg. 2;
Fig. l is a perspective View in sectlon of a modified form of the invention.
Description As seen in the drawings, the apparatus is comprised primarily of a box body 8 and a cover 9 therefor. The dimensions of said body and cover may be varied. It is preferred, however, that the apparatus shall be diminutive to adapt it for pocket use, 1f desired.
. Preferably the body 8 is provided with a wood-removing cutter 10.
shown in the drawings, has a funnel-shaped body, which supports in service relation an interiorly-extended knife 11. The knife 11 serves to remove the wood from the lead or the marking portion of a pencil when the same is inserted within the funnel body 10 and turned while being pressed against the edge of the knife 11. The shavings removed by-the' knife 11 are delivered through the side wall 12 inthe cutter 10 and deposited in the bottom of the body 8.
The cover 9 is provided adjacent the ends Specification of Letters Patent. I
The cutter, as
Patented opt. as, 1918. Serial No. 209,341.
thereof, with spring-like supporting sections 13. The sections 13 are preferably formed by severing the portion thereof adjacent the ends of the cover,
sive 15 is introduced. The sections 13 are also removed at-ithe forward edge thereof from a central bridge portion 16 integrally connected with or rig dly attached to the cover 9, the intervening space being provided for the abrasive 15, the edges whereof are in. service extended beneath the bridge 16, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The resiliency of the sheets of abrasive 15 is relied upon to give the necessary pressure to remove the lead of the pencil when drawing the same to a point. If the lead or point of the pencil is not inserted completely under the'bridge portion 16, it will be understood that the refuse or lead filings left on the sheet of abrasive will flow into the box for deposit on the bottom of the body 8, when the sheet of abrasive is depressed as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
As indicated in Fig. 1, two characters of abrasive are preferably employed, one being coarser than the other. One or more layers of the abrasive strips are employed as shown in the drawings, where two layers are indicated.- It will be understood that if desired, arrangements may be made for employing an increased number of sheets.
When introducing the abrasive sheets in active position in connection with the top 9, it will be seen that the two sections ofthe sheets cooperate, the one having its edge under the bridge 16 forming an anchorage or resistance for the resilient exercise of the other ortions of the sheets for holding the unused portions of the said sheets against the sides of the cover 9. This arrangement permits the easy introduction of the body -portion 8.
, shifted to present new or fresh surfaced sections. To do this, the cover 9 is removed from the body 8 when it will be found that the abrasive strips orsheets are readily accessible.
'It will be understood that while I have herein shown an abrasive in the form of sheets of sand paper, it will be obvious that any suitable form of abrasive, either thus producing a slot 14,
' through which the unused section of an abrabody to engage the ends of said sections .to
stance is attached to the box body or tothe bridge 16 thereof.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4, the abrasive 17 is rigidly attached at one edge to one side of the box body 8, with a bridge 18 at the opposite side to prevent the lift of abrasive above the box level.
Claims:
1. A pencil sharpener comprising a boxlike body; a plurality of sheets of abrasive bent to form angularly'disposed sections, one of said sections being disposed in covering relation to said bo y; and means for supporting said covering sectlons, said meansembodying cross members extending,
across said body, one of said members forming a bridge disposed at the center of said prevent the lift thereof above the level of said body.
2. A pencil sharpener comprising a boxlike body; a plurality of sheets of abrasive bent to form angularly-disposed sections,
one of said sections being disposed in coVering relation to said body; and means for supporting said covering sections, said means embodying cross members extending across said body, one of said members forming a bridge disposed at the center of said body to engage the ends of said sections to prevent the lift thereof above-the level of said body, said means further embodying a plurality of cover sections separated to form slats or braces extending across said body and arranged for the interweaving of said covering abrasive sections.
3. A pencil sharpener comprising a boxlike body; a cover surrounding said body for covering the sides thereof, said cover ,providing a space between the ends thereof and the ends of said body; a resilient sheet of abrasive bent to form angularly disposed sections, one of said sections closing the top of said body and the other section being held between said body and said cover in the space provided therefor for supporting the firstmentio ned section in covering relation to said body; and a bridge member extending across said body for engaging the free end of said first-mentioned section to limit the lift thereof.
