LEAD-POINTER.
Application filed August 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Lead-Pointer, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a lead pointer, clip and cap of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide in a device of the kind mentioned a lead pointer of new and novel construction which is very inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be mounted in a pencil case cap or a clip or any suitable support.
Still a further object is to provide a sup port having a clip and a lead pointer mounted thereon, which support is adapted to be mounted on a pencil or a pencil case.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a pencil equipped with a combination pencil pointer, clip and cap embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of my device removed from the pencil.
Fig. 3 shows an. enlarged, plan view of my improved device.
Fig. t show a vertical, sectional view of the cutter parts, taken on the line 4. l of Fig. 3, illustrating the manner in which a lead is inserted into the pointer.
Fig. 5 shows a horizontal, sectional view, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 shows a plan view of the blank from which my improved lead pointer is made.
It will be understood that my improved device may be used with a wooden lead pencil, but is preferably used in connection with clutch or propelling pencils of the type having a metal case.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally a hollow pencil case, having at its upper end a screw-threaded portion 11. My invention comprises-a cap 12 preferably of substantially cylindrical form, having a smooth upper portion and a screw-threaded Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. a, rear.
Serial No. 44,642.
Mounted in one end of the cap 12 is an ordinary rubber eraser 1 1. The other end of the cap 12 is provided with a cover 15, having a central opening 16. Mounted on the smooth portion 12 is a spring clip comprising the vertical portion 17, the outwardly and downwardly inclined portion 18, the vertical portion 19, and the roll or curved portion 20.
My improved lead pointer is mounted within the cap 12 in such position that it may be used to sharpen a lead inserted through the opening 16. My lead pointer comprises a blank 21 substantially rcctangular in form, adapted to be folded on its transverse, central line 22 into opposed blades which are inclined from the line 22 away from each other. The ends of the blank in the completed cutter are spaced from each other, and may be bent outwardly on the lines 23, as shown in Fig. 4. Near the opposite ends of the blank 21 on opposite sides thereof, are lateral extensions 25.
Formed in the blank 21 on opposite sides of the transverse median line, are triangular slots 26 pointed at their ends adjacent to the transverse median line of the blank, and wider at their ends adjacent to the ends of the blanks. lVhen the blank is folded into a V-shape, as shown in Fig. 41-, the walls of the slots 26 form pairs of opposed cutting edges adapted to engage a lead inserted into the cutter and to cut off the lead when either the lead or the cutter is rotated.
After the blank is folded over to form the cutter, the extensions are each bent to extend from the part of the blank on which they are formed to the opposite or opposing blade, as clearly shown in Figs. 4: and 5, whereby the extensions 25 serve to reinforce and strengthen the cutter and hold it in proper shape, and also as guide means to center the lead with relation to the cutting edges formed by the walls of the slots 26.
The outwardly turned portions at the ends of the blank 21 are secured to the under surface of the cover 15 in the form of my device shown in the drawings. so that the cutter will be immediately below the opening 16.
In the practical use of my improved device, the lead 27 may be removed froln the pencil case 10 and its point inserted through the opening 16, and the cutter rotated, or the "up can be removed and rotated, l'eaving the lead stationary, whereupon the cutting edges of the blades of the cutter will smooth and, point the lead.
The advantage of a lead pointer mounted on the )encil case in some wa andzmadeim similarly be mounted on a support for sharpening the lead point.
I have made my lead pointer in a variety of forms and can probably make it in other forms, and have been able to mount the pointer in various Ways and at various places on the pencil; I, therefore, do not Want to confine myself to the particular construction hereshown of the lead pointer, nor to the particular arrangement thereof With relation to the clip or the cap or the pencil case, and it isiny intention to cover by. this. application any such changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts as may be included within the reasonable scope of my claim.
I claim asmy' invention:
In a device of the class described, a pair of opposed blades secured together at one edge andinclined upwardly from their commonedge and away from each other, said blades-having openings for forming a cutting edge, each blade having at its upper end a flange extending laterally outwardly, said openings extending Well into said flanges, opposite flanges secured to the respective blades at one side edge and] extending to; position for engaging the side edge of the opposite'blade;
