UNDEBGARMENT.
agences.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application lled August 28,1916. Serial No. 117,180.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it lknown that I, MARY D. NnmsoN', a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to undergarments and has for its object to provide a garment including what isl commonly 'known as drawers formed of relatively unyielding and inelastic material,` such as muslin, so as to comfortably fit'the body of the wearer in any position to avoid drawing or pulling, particularly at the crotch, and to be easily opened when desired.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detail description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
1n the drawings, illustrating the applica? tion of my invention -in one form,-
Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear views of the garment as the same would appear when spread out fiat. Fig.l 3 is a side view of the garment closed. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the garment partially open. Fig. 5 is a View of the other side of the garment from that shown in Fig. 3.-
Figs. 6 and 7 are detailed views/showin the manner of securing the fastening mem ers. Figs. 8 and 9 are views of a slip embodying attached drawers features. Figs. 10 and 11 show a combined waist and drawers capable of being opened entirely along one side.
The garment comprises a front portion- 10 which may be formed of members 11 and 1 2 joined together by a central seam 13- and which is clearly shown in Figs. 3,4 and 5, and is cut so as to hang flush or straight when in use. The garment further embodies a back portion 14 comprising two sets of members 15 and 16 joined together by a central seam 17. The members 11, 12 and 15, 16, respectively, are united at the crotch, as indicated at 18, forming a closed-crotch garment. The members 10 and 14 are further united along one side by a comparatively straight seam 19. The rear portion 14 is out large and full and is gathered along the seam 19, as indicated at 20, whereby a arge amount `of fullness, indicated at 21, is produced in the garment, thus giving perfect freedom in .an-y position of the wearer whether sitting, standing or bending over,
and preventing any drawing or pulling at the crotch or across the seat. On the other side the portion 14 is similarly fulled, as indicated at 22, in connection with a fastener strip 23. The fastener strip is a straight band adapted in co eration with a similar Patented Got. 8, 1918. v
band or hem 24 on t e side of portion 10 to provide a holding member for complemental fasteners 25, 26, which may be snaps, hooks andv eyes, Ybutton andbuttonholes or any other ofthe well-lmown forms of fastener devices employed in connection with garments. It will thus' appear that the garment is opened for putting on or removal or for other purposes solely along a side seam, as indicated generally at 27 .Y At the same time, by reason of the gathered connection of rear portion 14 with ythe band 23, the garment when closed has the same characteristics in respect to fullness of the rear portion a's if said rear portion were gathered directly along both side seams, as is shown in reference to seam 19 and gathering 20.
As shown'in Figs. 8 land 9, a garment is provided in which the back portion 30 is formed of a single piece of material sewed to a fastener strip 31 by a fulled seam, as
indicated at 32, which is adapted to be secured by fastener members to al front strip 33 whichy is connected by a seam v34 with back strip 30,v said seam extending substantially in a line with the fastener member 31 which isadapted to be secured to fasteners 35 'along the lower underseam portion of member 33. A second front member 36 is connected by a central'seam 37 with member ,33 and by a fulled seam as indicated at'38 with rear member 30. c and 40 are secured together at tliejcrptch 41 in the same manner as is trueofthe-garments shown in Figs. 1 andl 2.
r1`his garment has all the features of ease and comfort in wear of the drawers only heretofore described, and is'a highly satis-` factory substitute for the so-called envelopl the upper portion 42 is formed as a waist with a .waistband 430 to which the drawers are connected., these drawersbeing formed identically the same as those shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. The waist pcrtion 42 may conveniently be made with open sides 43 ex- .tending into shoulder straps 44 'and 45, of
which one as strap 45 may be Vopen `and l, bind nor chafe.
adapted to be secured by button or other fastener 46. In this form of garment the waist 42 may be tight fitting and access into the garment be at the opening up the entire side, including the drawers fastener members- 26, as clearly indicated in Fig. 10. In any of the other forms of garment, particularly that shown in Figs. 8 and 9, which is made relatively bulky, the entrance into the garment may be effected V conveniently through the openingI at the top. v
The advantages of my garment have been very fully given in connection with the de-- scription of the parts thereof. The garment may be readily applied and removed as necessity requires either in the form of drawers alone, or in the combined vslip and drawers or waist and drawers, as above indicated. In each instance a closed crotch is provided, and the provision of the side opening and fulled seatportion makes it practicable to withdraw or `remove the garmentor any part thereof as may be needed, and the garment inV use will be comfortable in any position of the wearer and will not pull nor I' claim:
1. A garment comprising a drawers member, the'rear portion of said member consisting of material of greater 'length than the material of thecorresponding` front portion thereof, one edge of said rear portion being permanently connected throughout its full length to the corresponding edge of the front portion, the opposite edge of said rear portion being detachably connectedto the corresponding edge of the front portion from its bottom a substantial distance toward its top, whereby substantial fullness is given to the drawers.
2. A garmentcomprising a body portion adapted to envelop the upper part of the wearer and a drawers member formed in conjunction with said body portion, the rear portion of said member consisting of material of greater length than the material of the corresponding front portion thereof, one edge of said rear portion being permanently connected throughout its full length to the corresponding edge of the front portion, the opposite edge of said rear portion being detachably connected to the corresponding edge of the frontportion from its bottom a substantial distance toward its top, whereby substantial fullness is given to the rear portion only of said drawers.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
