Be it known that I, BENJA IN F. .Enw n, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfax, in the county of Atehison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in end gates and it contemplates, primarily, the provision of a novel end gate and means for securing the same in a closed position and also in a partly open and approximately vertical position thus assisting the operator to properly dispense the contents of the wagon body and to thus effectually control the delivery of the contents.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the type in question that is extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and highly practical from both the standpoint of the manufacturer and the standpoint of the user rand which, it is believed, may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent duringthe continuance of the following description.
These objects are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanyingdrawings, described in the following specification, and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is. a view in side elevation showing a portion of a Wagon body, and my improved end gate as in aclosed position;

In the drawings; 10 designates the wagon box or body in connection with which my improved end gate is shown, but it is to be understood, of course, that I am not limited to the specific application of the end gate and that the latter may be also used in connection with wagon bodies of other types and constructions, if it is so desired.
In reducing my invention to practice, I provide the wagon box 10, adjac nt its rear end and its upper cdge, with suitably spaced strap bearings 11 which are secured in place as at 12, and carry slightly offset guide brackets 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. These bearings are positioned on each side of the wagon box and are designed to be engaged certain means. carried by the end gate, will'subsequently appear. It will also be noted that the forward one of the brackets 13 has positioned therethrough, an inwardly directed stud 14:, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
I further provide the wagon box 10 with spaced bearings 15, these bearings being positioned adjacent the rear end and the lower edge of the box, secured in place as at 16', and having portions 17 extending beneath the wagonjbox, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The bearings15 also carry offset brackets 18- (as shown in Fig. 3) the forward one of which carries a securing pin, or stud, 19, similar to. the stud 14., above described.
The end gate 20, sl'iown in the present embodiment, carriesuponits outer face, spaced silils 21 and22, respectively, sill 21 carrying forwardly directed arms 23, as at 2d, while arms 25 which are of greater length than arms: 23 are pivotally mounted on the end gate 20 adjacent the sill 22, as at 26. Arms 23 pass between bracketsv 13 and bearings 11:, and: rest upon studs 14, while arms 25 pass between brackets 18 and bearings 15, and rest upon studs 19. All of the arms carry depending catches on shoulders 27 and 28. The catches or shoulders 28 engage respectively with the studs 1 1' and 19 when the end gate is in the positionshown in Fig. 2, and the catches 27 engage respectively With the studs14" and 19' when the end gate is in a closed position, Fig. 1. This construction is illustrated to advantage in Fig. 5.
In order to enable the operator to lock the arms 23 and 25 securely in adjusted position, I provide the forward ones of the brackets 13 and 18 with pivoted cams 29 which have handles 30 whereby they may be operated. lBy' positioning the cams, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the arms will be held in secure engagement with the respective studs, and as a consequence, the end gate will be locked in its respective position. On the other hand, by releasing the arms from action of the cams the end gate may be quickly and easily shifted either to a closed vor open position, and subsequently locked by the operator. In its open position, the end gate stands in an approximately vertical position and in spaced relation tothc open end of the wagon body or bed, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen, therefore, that the end gate, when in open position, directs the material down ward and prevents it "from moving rearward beyond the limit determined by the position of the end gate. As an example of the operation and effect of this end gate, let it be assumed that the wagon body is loaded with coal which it is desired to dump into a trap door or man-hole at. the edge of a sidewalk: the fastening device 30 will be released and the weight of the coal will force the end gate into the spaced relation shown in Fig. 2 and the coal is at once allowed to pass downward through the downwardly diverging space between thewagon body and end'gate, the latter preventing the coal from shooting over and beyond the trap door or man-hole. When the rear end of the wagon body has been emptied and there remains a quantity of coal in the frontend of the wagon body, ascoop may be used in the ordinary way for passing the coal to the rear end of the vwagon body, and this may be done without from banking or choking in its delivery.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be clearly understood, and theret'orefurther detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
In reducing the invention to practice, it will be found that the form referred to herein "as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most eflicient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in accordance: with the adoption of the device, it is emphasized that variousminor changes in the details of construction and in Copies .of this patent may be obtained for the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required. without; sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as detiued in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is-claimed to be new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a wagon body and an end gate therefor, upper and lower arms pivoted to the end gate near the top and the bottom thereof, respectively. and extending along the sides of the wagon body and having depending catches in their rear ends, upper and lower bearings at the sides of the wagon body to receive the respective arms, means co-acting with the said catche and constituting stops to hold the end gate in both closed and open position, and cums on the wagon body to hold the Catches in the path of the said stops.
2. The combination of a wagon body, an end gate therefor, lower supporting members pivotally connected to the lower portion of the end gate, upper supporting members pivotally connected to the upper portion 01 the end gate, lower guiding members on the wagon body and carrying said lower supporting mei'nbers and allowing the latter to move horizontally with relation thereto, upper guiding members carrying said upper supporting members and allowing the latter to move horizontally with relation thereto. and securing devices cooperative with said lower supporting members and upper supporting members for holding said end gate in its closed position and allowing it to more into such position as to provide a downwardly diverging outlet opening, the construction of said upper and lower supporting members being such as to allow a greater movement of the lower end of said end gate than of its upper end and to arrest said end gates movement away from the wagon body.
