Application filed Api-i1 25, 1917.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, llmza JnssnN, a citiw zen of the United States, residing at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and hasA for its primary object to provide a wrench adapted for use in connection with nuts and the like Aof diderent sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the nut operated upon is firmly gripped between the jaws of the wrench during the operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which it is not necessary to remove the same from the unit after it has once been applied-until the operation has been completed.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1, is a perspective view,
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 4, is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a rectangular frame 5 which is preferably formed of cast metal. One of the side walls of the rectangular frame is provided with a perfora-4 and 9 is a U-shaped member 10 the legs ofV which are adapted to lie within the confines p Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
-Seral No. 164,507.
of the rectangular frame 5 to form a pair of parallel guide members 11. Slidably mounted on the guide members 11 is a block or jaw 12 which is provided with spaced apertures 13 through which the guide members 11 pass, and swiveled to the jaw 12 is a screw threaded stem 14 which is adapted for threaded engagement with the screw threaded perforation 6, and said screw threaded stem 14 is provided with a suitable operating handle 15 by which it is rotated.
Connected to the end walls of the rectangular frame 5 is a yoke member 16 to the upper end of which is secured a right angularly' projecting member 17, said yoke member 16 and member 17 providing an operating handle for the wrench.
In operation, the rectangular member is positioned in such manner that the nut to be operated upon lies within the confines thereof. The operating handle 15 is then turned to rotate the screw threaded stem 14 to move the jaw 12 toward or away from the stationary formed by the side wall of the frame into engagement with the nut. When the nut has been firmly gripped between the movable jaw 12 and the stationary jaw of the rectangular frame, the handle 17 is grasped and the device is rotated until the nut is removed from its bolt., the
nut remaining between the said movable and stationary Jaws.
By this construction it will be seen that;
the present invention provides a device by which the nut is positively retained after it has been removed from its bolt thus obviating the disadvantage of the method now employed, which necessitates the rengaging of the wrench with the nut during the 0peration of tightening or loosening the nut.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A device of the class described, comprising a movable object engaging frame including side and end walls, a stationary jaw formed by one of said side walls, a movable jaw mounted within the frame, means for guiding the movable jaw, such means constraining the movable aw to motion toward and from the stationary jaw only, an adjusting In testimony whereof, I a'x my signature stem plvoted at one end to the movable Jaw 1n the presence of two Wltnesses. and opeiatlvely connected to the remalnlng Side Wall of the frame, and means secured ELIZA JESSEN to the end Walls of said frame for' rotating Hl/Vtnesses:
the latter when the movable and stationary F. KARL GRASSLE,
jaws are engaged With an object. DONALD M. HAYES.
