To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ESSIE E. Honenn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Maidstone, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment fastenors, and more particularly to separable fasteners of the hook and eye type.

The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efficient device of this character which may be quickly attached to clothing without the use of thread or any extraneous attaching means and a hook member which is so constructed as to effect a reliable connection with the eye to prevent accidental separation of the members.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made Within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated the hook 1 constituting one member of this fastener is composed of a single piece of wire bent to form two parallel side members or arms and 3 with a coil 4 connecting them at one end. The arm 2 is provided with a pointed terminal forming an attaching pin, the other member being provided at its free end with a shield or socket 5 to receive said terminal. A bill 6 is carried by the arm 3 and is formed by extending the wire constituting said member laterally outward to form a loop the side bars 7 of which are spaced apart any suitable or desired distance. and are bent intermediately of their ends as shown at 8 to form the bill 6. These spaced side bars of the bill form an extending gripping area for engagement with the eye to be described so that pivoting of the hook relatively to the eye is prevented. Thisbill 6 is provided with an inwardly extending projection or hump disposed adjacent the inner side of arm 2 when the parts are in operative position, and the portion which overlies said arm 2 is outbowed to cause a locking action to exist for holding the fastener in operative position and to prevent the disengagement of bill 6 from the eye 10 in connection with which it is to be used, and which will presently be described.

This hook 1 is adapted to be secured to a portion of the garment in connection with which it is to be used by passing the pin 2 through the material from which the garment is formed, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bill or hook proper extending toward the edge of the garment member to be fastened.

The eye 10 which is designed for use in connection with hook 1 is here shown in the form of a small safety pin, the pin or pene trating member 11 of which has its pointed free end adapted to be engaged with and housed in a socket 12 carried by the other end 13 of the pin as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 that this eye 10 is connected with the garment member to be fastened to the member which carries the hook I by passing pin 11 through the material constituting the member as is shown clearly in Fig. 1. hen the eye and hook have been so engaged with the garment members they are connected by inserting the bill of the book through the eye as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 and when so positioned they will securely hold the members to be connected in en gaged position against all possibility of accidental separation. This locking engagement is especially due to the fact that the humps or projections 9 of the hook bill pass laterally forward beyond the pin member thereof to prevent the possibility of the side member 13 of the eye passing between said bill and said pin member 2.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the'device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within 1 the scope of the claimed invention.
