Z '0 all whom, it may concern: a
;-Be it known that L'Hnxar G. BEA-UDETTE, a citizen of the United 7, States, residing at Worcester, in the county of VTorcester and State of lvlassa chusetts, have invented a new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to a door check of the type in which the check engages the door and temporarily stops its swing and' thereafter permits the door toclose under continued pressure.
It is the general object of my, invention to unprove and simplify the construction of such door checks, to increase their efiiciency, and to make them more reliable in operation.
With this general object in view my improved door check in its preferred form comprises a single pivoted resilient member adapted to engage the door at a point above the plane of the pivot. upon which the check is mounted. The check is so supported that the engaging portion of the check is movable from normal position in an upward direction only. The check is furthermore provided with a convex surface which makes rubbing contact with the door during the final closing movement thereof.
My invention further relates to certain arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The preferred form of my invention is sh own in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved door check;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the casing is formed.
M improved door check is of very simpl construction, comprising a single fixed casing member 10 and a single movable engage ing member or check 11. The casing is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet material out in the form of the blank shown in Fig. 3. After the blank is bent or pressed into final shape front portion 12, a back 13, lower attaching it comprises a and upper and portions 14 and 15. Suitable perforations are made in the blank 10 through which screws 16 may be inserted to secure the blank to the door casing, and also a screw 17 may be inserted in holes 17 or 17 Specification of Letters Patent. "Patented Mar. 12; 1918- Application-filed April 23, 1917 seriaiivo. 1es,s70.-
. to act as a pivot-for the engaging member 11. 7
in normal position and is formed with a substantially pointed outer end and with a convex contacting surface 11 e The operation of my improved door check will be evident from inspection of Fig. 2 which shows a door D just engaging the portion 11 of the check 11. Such engagement takes place at a point above the plane of the pivot 17 but so slightly above the pivot that the check is substantially unmoved when abruptly engaged by the swinging door 1). After the momentum of the door has been checked, however, the continued pressure of the door against the check gradually pushes itupward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus permitting the door to close gradually.
The convex outer or lower face of the check 11 engages the door with a rubbing contact as the check is raised and assists in retarding the closing action of the door springs.
While not limiting my invention thereto I consider the specific shape of check shown in the drawing to embody to an unusual degree the important advantages above indicated. Continued use may slightly shorten the check but will not materially alter its shape.
As is well known, doors are mounted to' 100 swing either right or left hand, and my improved door check may be used for doors of either hand by placing the screw 17 in either the hole 17 or the hole 17*. When changing from one hand to the other, it is of course necessary also to reverse the check 11. v
The outer edge of the back member 13 of the casing 10 is designed to afford a gage by 'nhich the check can be properly located with respect to the edge of the door easing or jamb, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, it will be clear that I have provided an eX tremely eiiicient door check which is exceedingly simple in construction, and which does not depend for its successful operation upon the use of springs or other delicate parts therein. It will be further evident that changes and modifications can be made in the construction shown herein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is 1. A door check comprising an engaging member formed of resilient material, and a casing to which said member is pivoted for movement in a vertical plane substantially normalh, to the face of the door when closed, said member being operatively positioned and controlled by gravity and being movable upwardly in continuous rubbing engagement with the face of the door during the slow closing movement of the door after engagement with said member.
2. A door check comprising an engaging Copies of this patent may be obtained for member formed of resilient material, and a casing to which sald member is pivoted i'or movement in a vertlcal plane substantially normally to the face ofthe door when closed,
said member having a convex engaging portion terminating at a point slightly above the plane of its pivot, the initial blow of the closing door being transmitted through said member to said pivot and being resiliently relieved by said member, and the convex surface of said member thereafter having continuous rubbing engagement with said door during the further closing movement thereof. v
5. As an article of manufacture an engaging member for a door check, said member being provided with a resilient upwardly extending portion adapted to initially engage and check the closing door and with a convex resilient edge portion adapted to have rubbing engagement with. said door during the further closing move ment thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto ai'iixed my signature.
