To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM F. GABRI- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alcova, in the county of Natrona and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wind guards for tobacco pipes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which can be adjusted to shield the pipe from the wind and at the same time permit ready access to the bowl of the pipe for the purpose of lighting the same, the shield being so constructed and arranged as to render extinguishing of the flame practically impossible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shield which may be adjusted to prevent sparks from the burning tobacco from being blown about by the wind, thereby obviating the danger of fire, the shield being so constructed as to practically inclose the top of the bowl, leaving only enough space to permit of proper draft. A further object is to provide means whereby the draft may be easily and quickly adjusted, so that when it is desired the draft may be increased to facilitate the burning of the tobacco and when the proper burning has been accomplished the draft reduced if desired.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and quickly removed to permit of the proper cleaning of the bowl of the pipe, and the pipe may be used without the shield in the ordinary manner.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pipe equipped with the improved wind shield, showing the same in the closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the shield in its open position to permit of the lighting of the pipe;
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the cylindrical portion of the shield detached from the pipe; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the shield top.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, there is provided a shield comprising a substantially cylindrical member 10 preferably constructed of spring metal and adapted to snugly fit the bowl 11 of the pipe. As stated this member 10 is of substantially cylindrical shape, the ends thereof being spaced Patented Feb. 12, 191%.

apart as shown at 12 to form a cylinder provided with a slit throughout its length. Adjacent the ends 12 the cylinder is intended to provide an inwardly extending lug or portion 13 adapted to engage spirally ranged groove 1 formed in the bowl of the pipe. This groove extends across the bowl to a point upon either side of the st m 15 of the pipe and has its inclined or spirally Enterprise, in the county of Owyhee and while the free end terminates at the top of the bowl as indicated at 16. The bowl is also formed with a substantially vertically arranged groove 17 which communicates with the groove 1 for a purpose hereinafter apparent.
The member 10 around its upper edge is formed with an outwardly extending bead 18, which provides upon the interior of the member a groove 19 and seated within this groove is the top 20 of the shield. This top is substantially semicylindrical and is of hollow formation and is provided around its edge with a bead 21, which is adapted to fit the groove 19 to removably hold this top to the member 10. The top is also provided with a central aperture 2, so that when the shield is in the position shown in Fig. 1 there will be an opening for the draft through the pipe.
As the member 10 is made of spring metal the top may be easily inserted therein or removed therefrom and the shield may be quickly adjusted to the bowl of the pipe, by inserting the inwardly extending portion 13 within the groove 14. When the shield is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the only draft through the pipe is by way of the aperture 22. l/Vhen it is desired to fill the pipe the shield may be removed or the top 20 may be removed and the shield left in position. If it is desired to light the pipe in a high wind the shield is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2, which permits of the insertion of the lighted match in the bowl of the pipe and when in such position it is practically impossible to extinguish the flame. By adjusting the shield to various positions around the bowl of the pipe by means of the groove 14, the draft through the bowl may be increased or diminished as desired. If desired the shield may be adjusted in the extension 17 of the groove 14 and remain in this position while the smoker is using the pipe.
It is believed that from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is;
1. The combination with a pipe having a spiral groove in the bowl, of a spring metal member adapted to snugly fit the bowl and provided with means engageable with said groove, the ends of said member being spaced apart to form a slotted cylinder and a perforated top provided for said member, adapted to snuglv fit the top of the bowl whereby, when said member is partially rotated around the bowl in one direction the top will be spaced therefrom to provide an opening for lighting the pipe. 7
