UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
THOMAS SPENCER MILLER, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND LOUIS G. HUGO-LES,
or NEW YORK, n. Y., assrenons COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HOISTING-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
Original application filed June 3, 1918, Serial No. 771,399. Divided and this application filed July 3, 1915.
' Serial No. 37,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS SPENCER MILLER and Lotus G. RUooLEs, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of South Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, and New York city, borough ofv Manhattan, in the county of New York, State of New York, have inventtuating engine or motor,
.theropes simultaneously or independently of each other.
A further object is to provide a hoisting engine which will embody a plurality of drums each provided with its individual acwhich may be driven to operate said drums simultaneously or independently of each other, and in which the actuating engines or motors may have the power thereof combined to act as the driving means drums.
In accomplishing the above ob ect we prefer to employ a plurality of drumseach hav ing its own individual driving engine or motor, and connect each drum with its engine or motor by an individual drive connect-ion,
whereby the drums are individually driven,
for one of or either of the and also provide means for connecting the individual drum driving means, whereby both the drums will be simultaneously driven and the power of both engines or motors may be exerted upon one of the drums.
The invention consists in improvements to be more full described hereinafter, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
We have fully and clearly 'other motor, and
illustrated our invention in the accompanymg drawings, to necessary to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein-- Figure 1 is a top plan view partly in section of a preferred embodiment of our inventlon.
Fig. 2 is aview in side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailed top plan view partly in section of a coupling means for connecting the motors for driving the drums shown in Fig. 1, so that both motors or engines may exert their power upon one of the drums.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 30, 31 designate hoisting drums mounted respectively on suitable shafts 32, 33, preferably arranged in longitudinal alinement and journaled in the side frames 36 and the intermediate member 37 of the bed-plate of the engine structure. In the preferred embodiment the drums 30, 31 are keyed or otherwise rigidly fixed to the shafts 32, 33, and each drum carries a driving gear shown respectively at 34, 35. Extending parallel with the axis of revolution of the drums 30, 31 are two driving shafts 38, 38 arranged in longitudinal alinement and having hearing at their outer ends in pedestals 39, and at their inner ends in said intermediate frame member 37. Each'of these shafts 38, 38 carries a driving pinion 40, said pinions meshing respectively with the gears 34, 35
41 which mesh regears 42, 42 on the carrying larger gears spectively with driving longitudinally alining armature shafts 43 of electric motors 44 which are preferably of a reversible type. The opposite ends of the armature shafts from the ends carrying the gears 42 are each provided with a friction disk or brake wheel 44 with which coiiperates suitable brake mechanism 45 operated by a solenoid 46 to positively grip and hold the armature shafts against notation. Each of the said moto is provided with its own individual con ""oller 47, the controller for each motor being independent of that for the each including a rotary hand-operated shaft 48 adapted to be oper- "ated by a hand lever 49 to control age supply current to its motor. 'We do not' deem it describe specifically the con- OF ONE-HALF T0 LIDGEBWOOD MANUFACTURING struction and operation of the controllers as .termediate position serves to reverse the motors. It will be seen that by the construction just described the motors are independently controllable to drive the drums ently of each other, so that the drums may driven in the same or opposite directions, or one may be at rest while the other is beingidriven. HM
Referring particularly to Fig. l of the drawings, it will be seen that the controller operating shafts 48 are arranged in longitudinal alinement with each other, and are provided at their inner or adjacent ends h coupling extensions 50 having polyends 51 adapted to be connected by a coupling sleeve 52 provided with when said extensions are disconnected, secure the sleeve to the extension carryin the same. It will be understood that this sleeve 52 is movable lengthwise of said shafts to couple them together to cause the controllers to be simultaneously operated, or said coupling may be moved in the opposite direction to disconnect the controller shafts so that said controllers set forth.
e preferably employ electric motors of a type capable of dynamic braking; that is which, when. over-speeded, generate current type is desirable because the motor operates automatically to retard rotation of the drum e provide means for connecting and dis connecting two of the longitudinally alining elements heretofore described,
thereof, while upon the opposite and alining armature shaft is an externally toothed clutch member 55, movable longitudinally of its shaft by a suitable operating means vtaneously operated when the 56 to engage within, or the member 54. i It will ently of the other motor.
at we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United S ta tes is ztwo reversible motors respectively driving said drums independently of each other, means for coupling said motors, independent controllers for the motors, and means for coupling said controllers.
In combination, two winding drums, two shafts for driving said drums, a motor for driving each shaft, clutch means for connecting said shafts, individual controllers for the motors, and means for connecting said controllers for simultaneous operation.
In combination, two winding drums, a motor for driving each drum, gear connections between each motor and its drum, whereby said drums are ioiidividually driven,
sai
motors, and means for connecting said controllers for simultaneous whereby the motors may be applied to one of the drums, and means for connecting the controllers whereb the latter -may be simultaneously operate i In combination, a plurality of winding drums, a motor for driving each of said drums, a controller for each motor, coupling respectively on the motor said motors maybe conone of the drums by all of the motors, and means for connecting all of the controllers whereby they may be simultaneously operated to control the motors.
n combination, a plurality of winding drums, a motor for driving each of said means for connecting said -motors whereby they may all be used to drive one of the drums, a controller for each of the motors, a controller shaft for each controller, means for connecting the controller shafts whereby the controllers may be simulmotor shafts are coupled.
7. In combination a drums, a motor for drums, clutch means plurality of winding driving each of said for connecting the of the'motors, a congear connections troller for each' motor, each of said cong a controller shaft provided an operating lever, and means for connectmg the controller shaft may be simultaneousl said operating levers when they are couple 8. In combination, ranged to rotate on alinement with each ot with a gear, two pri A dividual power shaft ment with each othe gear, shafts between the drums and geared the gears on said po trollers havin s whereby they y operated by one of to control the motors two winding drums araxes in longitudinal her and each provided me movers having in s in longitudinal aliner, and each carrying a the power shafts and to the drum gears and wer shafts, said shafts between the power shafts of the drums being in longitudinal alinement, means for connecting and disconnecting two of said rotatable elements in longitudinal alinement 20 with each other, individual controlling means for each of said prime movers, and means for connecting and disconnecting said controlling means whereby they are capable of simultaneous or individual operation. 25
In testimony whereof we have hereunto sigied our names in the presence of two su scribing witnesses.
