SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,527, dated August 25, 1903.

Be it known that I, NELs KRIs'rENsEN TEIL- BORG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VauSa, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wood-working; and its object is to provide a new and improved clamp which is simple and durable in constructiomvery effective in operation,arran ged for convenient use on carpenters and wheelwrights work-benches or sawbucks and other devices, and arranged to securely clamp a board or other piece of work in position for the mechanic to work on it.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
A prac-tical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The tubular support A for the clamp is arranged to slide in one of a series of openings B' or B2, formed in either the front or the top of a work-bcnclrB, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and the forward end of the said support A is provided with an angular arm A', on which is fulcrumed the middle portion o'f a clamping-lever C, provided with a head D at one end and pivotally connected at the other end by a link E with a hand-lever F, fulcrumed on the support A a distance in the rear of the beginning of the angular arm A', as plainly illustrated in the drawings. Now when it is desired to clamp a board or other piece of work G against the front of the top of the bench B, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, then the support A is slidably engaged with one of the apertures B', so as to bring the head D in contact with the outer face of the board or work G at the time the hand-lever F is in a lowermost position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. As soon as the head D is in engagement with the front face of the board or work G then the operator swings the hand-lever F upward into the position shown in Fig. 3, so that a swingingmotion is given to the lever` C to move the head D iirmly in contact with the board or work G to clamp thelatter against the front face of the top of the bench. 4 Now by swinging the lever F in the direction described the support A is bound or held in position on the bench Bby frictional contact, so that the said support A does not move during the time the work is clamped in position. Furthermore, the handle F is held against ac cidental return movement by the action of the link E, which extends upwardly and rearwardly from the lower end of the clampinglever C at the time the hand-lever F is swung into its innermost iinal position. (Shown in Fig. 3.) When it is desired to clamp the board or piece of work G' on the top face of the top of the benchB, then the support A is engaged with one of the apertures B2 and is moved downward therein until the head D rests on the top of the board or work G', with the handlever F in an open position. The hand-lever F is now swung into the closed position, shown in Fig. 2, so that the head D iirmly clamps the board or work G' in place on the top of the bench. ln a like manner the device may be used on sawbucks or other devices, and in any case the clamp can be read ily adapted to boards of any desired thickness, as the slidable connection of the support A with the bench adjusts the device to all thicknesses of work.
If desired, the face of the head D may b e roughened or corrugated, as indicated in Fig. l, to insure a iirm hold on the work, and for certain kinds of work it may be desirable to employ a head D', as shown in Fig. 4, hung on a pivot D2, held on the upper end of the clamping-lever C. The rear end of the head D' is adapted to be engaged by a latch ll, slidably held on the lever C and pressed in locking engagement with the head D' by a spring I, secured on the said lever.
The hand-lever F is preferably curved, as plainly shown in Fig. I, so as to extend with its handle end close to the head end of the clamping-lever C, so that the clamp takes up comparatively little room and the handle end of the hand-lever F is not in the Way of the Workman. In order to prevent the hand-lever from being thrown over too far toward the clamping lever C, a stop A2 is provided on the angular arm A for the link E to abut against, as plainly shown in the drawings.
The device is very simple and durable in construction,cheap to manufacture, and readily adjusted for different kinds of Work and also readily applied to the front or top of the bench and other devices.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. A clamp comprising a support arranged for slidable engagement withl a Work-bench or like device, a clamping-lever fulcrumed on the support, a hand-lever fulcrumed on the support, and a link connecting the hand-lever with the said clamping-lever, as set forth.
2. A clamp comprising a snpporthaving an angular arm and arranged for slidable engagement With a Work-bench or like device, a clamping-lever fulcrumed on the said angular arm, a hand-lever fulcrulned on the support, and a link connecting the hand-lever with the said clamping-lever, as set forth.
A clamp comprising a support having an angular arm and arranged for Slidable connection with a Work-bench or like device, a clamping-lever fulcrumed at or near its middle on the said support, the clamping-lever being provided at one end with a head, a hand-lever fulcrumed on the support, and a link connecting the other end of the clampinglever with the said hand-lever, as set forth.
4. A clamp comprisinga support having an angular arm and arranged for slidable connection With a Work-bench or like device, a clamping-lever fulcrumed at or near its middle on the said support, the clamping-lever being provided at one end With a head, ahandlever fulcrumed on the support, a link connecting the other end of the clamping-lever with the said hand-lever, and a spring-pressed latch for engagement with the said head, as set forth.
