To all whom it may concern:
Bev it known that 1, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.)
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
.Onefof the objects of my invention is to provide etlicient draft rigging; A further object is to rovide a friction spring draft gear adapte to be employed inassociation with tandem draft rigging side castings.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Fi ure 1 is aside elevation, partly in vertical longitudinal section of a draft rigging embodying my invention. Referring to the drawings, the numerals 7 7 indicate draft members or parts of the under-framing of the car to which the draft rigging is applied; 8-8 sideplates secured by suitable means, as, for instance, the rivets 9-9to the draft members. The draft plates are such as' are mployed in tandem spring draft rigging an l each of said plates is provided with a fIt it stop 10. a front limiting stop 11, a inir'r lo op 12. a roar limiting stop 13, and a'rca'r stop 14. The middle stops 12-]2 are deeper than the and stops 10 and 14, respectively. Between the draft members is mounted a draw bar 15 provided with the usual upper and lower shoulders 16 and 17, respectively. A draft yoke 18 is secured to the draw bar and con nccts the same to the draft gear 13'), which is mounted between the side plates. In tandem' spring draft rigginghone compression resisting unit is mounted in the front pocket 20 formed between the front stops and. the middle stops and another compression resisting unit is mounted in the rear pocket ,21 formed between the middle stops and cross section taken on linethe rear stops of the side plates. In the particular embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, a friction compression resisting unit 22 is mounted in the front pocket and a. spring compression rosisting unit 23 is mounted in the roar pocket.
The friction compression resisting unit 22 comprises a shell 24: cylindrical shape having mounted therein the wedge 25, the annular-1y arranged friction shoes 2C26, the interposed anti-friction rollers Ii--27 and a plunger 2S'which rearwardly engages the friction'shoes is eX- tended through the rear opening of the fric-- tion shell and passing between the middle stops 1212 ofthc side castings, engages at its rear end the rear intermediate follower 29. i The wedge is provided at its forward end with a recess 30 to receive the nut 31 of the connecting bolt 32 which passes through the wedge and through theplunger the said connecting boltbcing provided at its rear end with a head 33 to engage it to the plun er. The rear end 34 of the friction shell IS, in normal position of the parts, seated against the center stop 12. A front follower 35 engages the wedge and in normal position is seated against the front stops 10. The spring compression resisting unit 23 mounted in the rear pocket 21, comprises the rear interu'lediate follower 29 and the rear follower 36. together with the springs 37 mounted between said followers. In normal position of the parts. the rear follower 36 engages against the rear stop shoulders 14. The compression resisting elements are incloscd within the yoke 18, the particular form illustrated in the drawing licingp twopart yoke or a yoke comprising two loops arranged side by side. The said loops are connected at their f'mwvard ends by the intercngaging hinge-forming parts 38-458 and are connected at their rear ends by the In y 39 passingthrough the lugs 40 upon the yoke. The upper and lower limbs 41 and 42 of the yoke, respectivcly. are provided each with a front iii-turned lug 43 and a spaced rear in-turned lug 44 providing a transverse groove 1-5 between the lugs. The inner portion of the lug 44 has a forwardly extending flange 4G inclosing a portion of the transverse groove 45. erably integral follower 47 having the upper and lower rearwardly extended flanges 48 and 49 respectively, which, together with the adjacent portions of the said follower, form a tongue adapted to enter an adjacent transverse groove to of the yoke.
At its forward end, the friction shell is provided with the upper and lower, prefer- .ably integral extensions 50 and 51 respectively, the flat ends of which extend transversely along the inner faces of the yoke limbs. The yoke is provided with the lateral plates 5252 which, together with the limbs, form a head within which the butt 53 of the draw bar 15 is received and the limbs are also provided with the in-turned gibs 54 which engage against the draw bar shoulders 16 and 17. Onrearward movement of the draw bar, the yoke remains stationary, the draw bar sliding rearwardly therein, forcing" the frontfollower against the-wedge, which brings the friction shoes into operation, the rearward movement of the friction shoes being resisted through the medium of the plunger 28 by the spring compression resisting unit 23. Thus I have provided a high capacity friction draft gear in which a short friction shell may be employed and all the parts of whiclr may be. assembled with tandem draft rigging side plates so that cars provided with such side plates may have substituted therein witlioutany change of stop and rear pockets, a compression resisting unit in-each of said pockets, a yoke to con-' nect said units to a draw bar, one of said units including a shell, the yoke and shell being provided with means to prevent their relative, longitudinal movement. 2. In a draft ri ging for railway cars, in' combination, tandem draft rigging side plates, a friction compression resisting unit in the one pocket thereof, a spring compression resisting unit in the other pocket thereof, a yoke to engage both of said units to a draw bar, the friction compression resisting unit including a shell, the said shell rel tive longitudinal movement therewith.

In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, side plates having end and middle stops, a friction compression resisting unit between the middle stops andone set of end stops, a spring compression resisting unit between the middle stops and the other set of end stops, a yoke to connect both of said units to a draw bar, the friction compression resisting unit including a shell, the said shell being rigidly and detachably engaged to the yoke.
