RAILWAY DRAFT RIGGING.

This invention relates to improvements in railway draft riggings.
One object of the invention is to provide a strong and simple means for attaching a draft gear to the draft sills of a car and one which may be easily applied and removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging wherein a single stop casting is employed, rigidly secured to the draft sills at a point adjacent the bolster of the car, to which are transmitted all the buffing and pulling shocks.
A further object of the invention is to provide a draftrigging, wherein is employed, in
combination with a shock absorbing mechanism, a two-part central yoke, a pair of side yokes and a fixed stop block directly coacting with the side yokes and with which the central yoke is rcmovably connected by a heavy key.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of the character described wherein a plurality of like yoke members are made use of, the same being arranged in reversed pairs to form the side and central yoke members respectively.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional View of a draft rigging showing my improvements in connection there with. And Figure 2 is a longitudinal, horizontal, sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 22 of Figure 1.
In said drawings, 10---1O denote channel shaped center or draft sills. A portion of a drawbar is indicated at 11 through which extends a transverse key 12 which serves to connect the drawbar to a pair of side yokes BB, the key extending through the respective yokes and working in longitudinally extending alined guide slots lid-13 at the front ends of the draft sills 10. Each of the sills 10, on the outer side thereof, has riveted thereto a slotted reinforcing cheek plate 14,
the slots of the cheek plates registering re s ectively with the slots of the side sills. l lisposed between the draft sills, adjacent the body bolster and rigidly secured thereto, preferably by rivets is a hollow stop casting A, preferably made in one piece.
The stop casting A is provided with spaced side walls 1515, topand bottom walls 16-16, front and rear walls 17 and 18 and a pair of horizontally disposed longitudinally extending parallel strengthening web sections 19-19 at the rear end thereof, a horizontally extending web section 20 at the front end and a relatively heavy horizontally disposed central web section 120. The front, top and bottom walls of the casting A and the webs 19, 20 and 120 are cut away centrally to provide an opening 21 adapted to receive the rear end of a two-part central yoke C-C for longitudinal movement.
The four yoke members B-B and C-C are preferably all of like construction, each being provided with a relatively large rectangular opening 22 adapted to receive the shock absorbing mechanism proper D and a front follower 28.
Each of the members B and C has one end thereof extended as indicated at 24:, the upper and lower faces of said extension converging outwardly. The extension 2-& of each yoke member is provided with a relatively long horizontally disposed slot 25 for a purpose hereinafter described. The yoke members B and C are fiat throughout their length on one side as indicated at 26. The opposite side of each yoke is also flat for the greater portion of its length as indicated at 27, and the corresponding side of the extension 24 thereof is preferably outwardly inclined toward the other side as indicated at 28.
The two members CC forming the twopart central yoke are arranged side by side with the flat faces 26 in adjacent relation the extensions 24 thereof being disposed rearwardly and working in the opening 21 of the casting A. A key 29 extending through the slots 2525 of the members C-C and alined openings 3030 and 3131 in the casting A and draft sills 10, respectively serves to slidably connect the two-piece central yoke to the casting A for limited movement in a rearward direction. The openings 30-30 and 31-31 are of slightly greater extent longitudinally of the mechanism than the width of the key 29 thereby permitting a limited amount of play. As clearly shown in the drawing, the openings 30 of the casting A extend through the thickened web sections 120, thereby providing additional metal for strength. The front end of the two-part yoke C-C is Igdapted to abut the inner end of the draw- The yoke members B-B forming the side yokes are reversely arranged to the members C-C, having the extensions 2d thereof disposed forwardly, and the slots therein receiving the key 12, with the forward ends of the slots in engagement with the key, the slots elongated rearwardly of the key, thereby providing for limited relative movement between the parts. The members .3 are dis posed on opposite sides of the two-part yoke (l-C. Each yoke member B has the flat side 26 thereof adjacent the corresponding side sill 10 and the rear end thereof normally abutting the front wall of the casting A.
The shock absorbing mechanism D is of that type wherein is employed a casting having a friction shell or cylinder 32 and an integral, substantially rectangular spring casing 38, the latter having therewithin a spring resistance 34: and the shell having mounted therewithin a plurality of friction shoes 35 and a wedge 36. lhe wedge 36 abuts the front follower 23 which in turn is adapted to abut the vertical walls at the front ends of the openings 22 of the yoke members 0, and the rear end of the spring casing 33 is adapted to abut the vertical walls at the rear ends of the openings 22 of the yoke members B.
It will be apparent that the shock absorbing mechanism and the yoke members are supported entirely from the draft sills by the keys 12 and 29, the usual saddle plate for supporting the same being entirely eliminated.
The entire mechanism is readily removable from between the sills 10, it being merely necessary to remove the keys 12 and 29 to lower the same, the yokes C-G being moved forwardly in the casting A to permit withdrawal through the opening 21. In placing the gear in operative position between the draft sills, the assembled mechanism is inserted between the same from the bottom and the keys inserted in position.
All the parts are readily removable and by employing the two part side yoke, I am enabled to use a key to connect the yokes to the coupler and at the same time the yoke members l3B are independently longitudinally niova ble to thereby accommodate thenr selves to the movement of the coupler when the latter is swung radially as occurs when the cars are traveling over curved tracks.
It will also be evident that l have further simplified the yoke construction by providing four yoke members which are all of identically the same construction, composing central and side yokes.
The operation is as follows: In buff, the drawbar presses against the front end of the two-part yoke CC moving the latter rearwardly, thus actuating the friction shock absorbing mechanism, since the combined friction shell and easing 3233 is prevented from rearward movement by engagement with the rear ends of the side yokes B-B whiclr are in abutment with the front face of the stop casting A. lrlearward movement of the central yoke CC relatively to the cast ing A is permitted by the same sliding on the key 29.
During draft, the central yoke C-C is held against forward movement by the key 29 engaging the rear ends of the slots in the extensions 2% of the yoke members, so that as the drawbar ll 1noves forwardly carrying the two-part yoke BB therewith, the friction shell and easing 32-33 slides forwardly relatively to the wedge and shoes of the mechanism, thereby absorbing the shock as will be understood, the wedge 36 being held relatively stationary by engagement with the front follower 23 which is held by the front end of the two-part yoke CC.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
1 claim:
1. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills; of a stop casting fixed to said draft sills; a shock absorbing mechanism; a drawbar; a pair of yoke members forming a two-part central yoke encirclin said shock absorbing mechanism; a second pair of yoke members disposed on opposite sides of said central yoke and also encircling said shock absorbing mechanism; means disposed at one angle to said yoke members for connecting one of said pair of yoke members to the drawbar; and means disposed at a similar angle for connecting the other pair of yoke members to the stop casting, one of said pair of yoke members being adapted to abut the stop casting and the other pair being adapted to abut the drawbar.
2. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills; of a stop casting secured thereto; a shock absorbing mechanism; a drawbar; a plurality of yoke members encircling said mechanism, said yoke members being arranged in sets, one set forming a central yoke and another set having the members thereof disposed on opposite sides of said central set and forming side yokes; key means arranged in one direction for connecting one set of yoke members to the drawbar; and key means extending in a similar direction for connecting the other set to the stop casting.
3. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills of a stop member secured thereto; a shock absorbing mechanism; a drawbar; and a plurality of substantially duplicate yoke members coacting with said shock absorbing mechanism, said yoke members being arranged in pairs, one pair being connected to the draWbar for limited movement relative thereto and the other pair being connected to the stop member for limited movement.
4. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills; of a shock absorbing mechanism; a drawbar; a stop casting secured to said sills; and a plurality of yoke members, each encircling said shock absorbing mechanism, said yoke members being arranged in two sets, one set having the front ends thereof connected to the drawbar by a key disposed at an angle to said yoke members and the rear ends thereof abutting the stop casting, and the other set having the front ends thereof abutting the drawbar and the rear ends thereof connected to the stop casting by a key extending in the same direction as the first mentioned key.
5. In a draft rigging, the combination With draft sills; of a stop member; a shock absorbing mechanism; yoke means encircling'said mechanism; a second yoke means encircling said mechanism and arranged substantially parallel With said first named yoke means, said second named yoke means being connected to the draft sills for limited movement relative thereto; of a drawbar; means for connecting said first named yoke means to the drawbar for limited relative movement, said connecting means being arranged to extend in a common direction.
