IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,963, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
I, CHARLES LEWANDO, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
The Nature of the Invention.
The nature of my invention consists in the shaping, arrangement, and combination of plates of sheet metal for forming a water-proof metallicroof, the exact nature ofwhich can best be understood by reference to the drawing and specification.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a plan showing a portion of a roof covered according to myiinproved method. Fig. 2 represents theshape of one of the plates before it is bent or folded. Fig. 3 represents one of the plates after it has been bent or folded and ready for placing upon the roof.
A A, &e., in Fig. 1, represent the separate plates of whichthe roof is composed, these plates being shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3. To form a plate I proceed as follows: From a plate of metal I cut a piece in the form represented in full lines in Fig. 2. I then fold the parts 0 a and c a? upward and over the body of theplate, and the parts a e and c a indicated in Fig. 3. This completes the plate, and it is ready for laying.
To cover the roof I proceed as follows: The lower or eaves-trough row is first laid and nailed sufficiently to hold it temporarily in place. I If desirable, this lower row may be united to or may even form the eaves-trough. The first row of plates being in position the folds at a e, 0 n 0 a and 0" a Fig. 3, are filled with an elastic water-proof cement. This filling is applied to the plates already on and to those next to be put on. The second row of plates may now be locked onto the firstthat is, the folded parts a c and a e of one plate may be locked into the folded parts 0 a of the next plate. When this is done and all the joints carefully filled with cement, the lapels on k I may be nailed down over the point of j unction of all the joints. These operations are to be continued until the whole roof is covered.
If thought desirable, the cement may be dispensed with and solder used in its stead.
I claim as my invention- The metallic roof, when the same is formed by uniting plates A A, 81.0., out, folded, and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
