Be it known that I; GEORGE FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohioyhave` invented a certain new and vuseful Improvement in Reclininfr- Chairs, of which the following is a speci cation.

This invention relates more especially to the Class of reclining chairs having a hinged back and a hinged foot rest and the object of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the bringing of the foot rest into reclining or sitting position is facilitated. A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the foot rest and the parts for operating it are largely concealed so that when the chair is in ordinary or normal position it has the appearance of an ordinary standing chair.

The invention is embodied in the construction hereinafter particularly described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is mainly a vertical section with parts in elevation.

ln the views 5 designates the side members of the chair frame and 6 and 7 forward and rear connecting members respectively. The back 8 is hinged at 9 between the side frame members at their rear portions. 10 designates a box-like front rail having an upholstered cover 11. The two parts together may be termed the foot rest box. Both the rail 10 and Cover 11 are hinged at 12 to the forward connecting member 6 so that the cover can be swung forward independently of the box or both the box and its cover can swing together. 13 designates the foot rest bar. IThis bar is connected with the interior of the box by means of two pairs of toggle arms 14 and 14a the upper members of the pairs being pivoted at 15 and 15a so that the foot rest bar can be folded up into the box or RECLINING-CHAIR.

Thel foot rest bar 13 isournaled at its ends in " members 16 and 16a which in turn are pivoted to the intermediate toggle'bars so 4thatthe foot rest, it being a Hat bar, can be turned on its axis to afford a substantially flat rest for the feet of the occupant when the foot rest is extended. The foot rest box has pivotally attached to its rear side a toothed bar 18 that is extended through a keeper plate 19 having a hole for the purpose and an edge 20 normally engaged by a tooth of the bar 18 to hold the foot rest box in the place to which it is swung. 21 designates a lifter lever pivoted at 22 in the lower end of the keeper plate and adapted when raised to lift the bar 18 out of engagement with the keeper. Journaled between the side members of the chair frame is a rock bar 23 composed of two portions held together by a nut 24: and threaded bolt 25. The bolt 25 is long and connecting its projecting end with the lifter lever is a link rod 26 so that by rocking the rock bar 23 in the proper direction the toothed bar 18 can be removed from the keeper plate thereby permitting the foot rest to be swung outward or released from an outward position to fall inward. As shown the link 26 has an elongated loop 26ZL where it is connected with the bolt 25 so that the bolt can be oscillated a little without operating the foot rest.

Assuming the chair to be in normal or sitting position the operation is this: The cover of the foot rest box is raised and the foot rest pulled down. The user then sits in the chair catching his heels in the foot bar rest which can then be raised to the position desired by raising the feet, the heels being` hooked under the foot rest for this purpose.

Vhen desired a depression of the push button so as to raise the lifter lever 21 releases the foot rest so that it falls to sitting position. After this the foot rest is folded back into its box.

The details of construction are susceptible of modification without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A leg rest for a chair including in combination, 'a `box-like front rail hinged to the seat frame of the chair, a cover for the same.

a foot receiving member, and toggle-arm members connecting the foot receiving member to said box-like front rail.

In a reclining chair, the combination with a standing frame, a hinged back and v:means for latclnng the same 1n upright and reclining' posltions, a front' rail forming a of the chair, said receptacle having a hinged cover, a foot rest having a toggle-arm connection with the interior of said receptacle and means for latching said receptacle and foot rest in raised' position, substantially as described.
