STOJE LliJ LIFTER.
APPLICATION mso APR. 7. |916.
lu m1041160@ STATES PATENT @lilllhlllt EDWARD PENTONY, O REDWOOD FALLS, l/L'XNNESOTA.
STU'VE-LID LIFTER.
Application iled April 7, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.' w
Be it known that I, EDWARD hmv'rorvr, a citizen ot the -United States, residing at Redwood Falls, in the county of Redwood and State oit Minnesota, have invented new and useful lnnnovements in Stove-Lid Liiters, ot which the following is a specilicati-on.
rlhis invention relates to a device which may be employed to remove stove lids from the stove particularly when said lids are in a heated condition.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device oi the class described having handle members provided with pivotally connected and crossed odset portions, one of said portions termin ating in lifting toot to be received in the recess in a stove lid and arranged in advance of laterally extending tongues on the offset portion to bear on said lid at one end of said opening and the other of said offset portions terminatimg` in a jaw having an end to engage the stove lid adjacent the other end of the recess.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described having a spring connected with one of the handle members and passing through a slot in the offset portion therein, and bearing against the other handle member to normally hold the end of said jaw and the lifting foot in spaced relation.
A still Jfurther object of the invention is to provide a stove lid litter of the class described in which one of the handle members has connected therewith a flexible element having an end which may be removably connected with the other handle member to limit the opening movement ot' the handle members under the influence of the spring associated therewith.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
rllhe preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claim maybe resorted to when desired.
Lilie characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov.. 2'?, 191W.
Serial No. 89,645.
is a bottoni plan view of the insected by a transversely extending opening et in said oiiset portion. The enlarged ottset portion oi' the handle member 1 terminates in an extension 5 which is curved and tapered to provide a jaw 6.
The handle member l is provided on its underitace `for a portion of its length with a handle piece 7 which may be formed from wood, or other material which is a poor conductor ot heat.
A second handle member 8 is provided and has a reduced and offset portion 9 betveen its ends, said offset portion passing through the elongated slot 3 in the oitset portion 2 ot the handle member 1 and is pivotally connected therewith by a pivot pin 10 passing through said reduced and oi'l'set portion and through the opening e in the odset portion ot' the handle member 1. rlhe reduced and offset portion 9 of the handle member 8 is slightly curved 'for a portion of its length and terminates at one end in a widened portion providing an angularly extending lifting foot 11 in advance of tongues 12 extending laterally from opposite sides of the slightly curved portion of the handle member 8, said tongues when the lifting foot has been inserted in the recess 14C in a stove lid 15, bear upon the lid adjacent an end of said recess. rllhe handle member 8 has secured to its outer tace, a handle piece 16, similar to the handle piece l on the handle member 1, so that when the eX- tension 1l on the handle member S is left within the recess 1li in the stove lid for a considerable length of time, the handle members will remain cool.
To normally hold the handle members 1 and 8 apart, a leaf spring 17 has one end secured to the handle piece 7 on the handle its length contacts with the bottom face of the handle member 8, on which is a yokeV 18 through which said spring is passed, with the yoke serving as a guide for the spring as the handle members are moved toward each other.
The handle member' 1 has formed at one end an eye 19 through which passes one end of a chain 20, said chain having secured to its other end a snap hook 2l for engagement with a loop on one end of the handle member 8, said chain being adapted to limit the opening movement of the handle mein bers under the influence of the spring and also provide a means by which the stove lid lifter may be suspended from a support.
When .it is desired to remove a stove lid by means of the lifter, the lifting foot 11 is positioned within the recess 141 in the stove lid, with the tongues 12 bearing upon the lid 15 adjacent one end or the recess 14. Pressure is now exerted upon the handle members 1 and S to cause the free end of the jaw G to contact with the top of the stove lid adjacent the other end of the recess therein. With the parts in this position, the lid is firmly held upon the foot 11 by the jaw 6 without imposing undue strain upon the ears 12 of the lifter so that when the lid is removed from the stove there is no opportunity for the lid to become disconnected from the lifter.
To disengage the lifter from the lid, the pressure upon the handle members is released to allow the spring 17 to restore the handle members to normal position at which time, the foot 11 may be withdrawn from the recess in the stove lid.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with lthe accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a stove lid lifter has been provided which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and highly e'licient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
In a device of the class described, a handle member having a slot therein, a second handle member pivotally connected with the other handle member and passing through the slot therein, a leaf spring having an end thereof seeured to the outer face of the first mentioned handle member and passing through the slot therein to bear on the inner face of the second mentioned handle member, and a yoke on the second mentioned handle member through which said pring is passed serving as a guide there- In testimony whereof I afiX my signature.
EDWARD PENTONY.
