Description

D- KATZENBEHGER SPRING HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.25, 19m

SPRING-KIN GE.
Application filed August 25, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR KATZENBERGER, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to spring hinges, and has for an object the provision of an improved construction for protecting the spring, while at the same time producing a nice appearance.
Another object in view is to provide a spring hinge having a. barrel formed with notches and caps on the ends of said barrel covering the notches for giving a better appearance to the entire structure and at the same time protecting the spring against the elements.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spring hinge embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the caps disclosing certain features of the invention.
Fig. 3is a longitudinal vertical section through the barrel part of the hinge shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through Fig. 3 on line 4.-t.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate the leaves of a spring hinge, which leaves are provided with ears 3 and A at each end through which the pintle 5 extends. A spring 6 is coiled around the pintle 5 and is provided with end sections 7 and 8 extending an appreciable distance from the pintle 5 and bearing against the respective leaves 1 and 2 for giving the same a tendency to remain in a given position, namely the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to make a neat appearing article, and at the same time protect the spring, a sleeve 9 is provided which surrounds the spring and extends from near one end of the hinge to the other. A notch 10 of an appreciable size is provided in each end of the sleeve 9 in order to allow the movement of the extensions of the spring Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2?, 191% Serial No. 188,140.
5 as the hinge is opened and closed. Ordinarily this would allow dirt to enter into the bearing parts of the hinge as well as produce a more or less unsightly appearance. To obviate this objection a cap 11 is provided at each end, said cap being provided with a notch 12 merging into an elongated opening 13 as shown in Fig. A, whereby the ends 7 and 8 of the spring may freely move and the notch 10 be maintained closed. The caps 11 will, of course rotate slightly, but will not present a large objectionable opening at any point.
What I claim is:
1. A spring hinge comprising a pair of leaves having bent up cars, a pintle extending through said cars, a spring surrounding said pintle formed with an extension at each end engaging said leaves, for moving same to a closed position, a sleeve surrounding said spring provided with notches in each end, and a cap for each end of the sleeve having openings substantially fitting the extensions of said spring whereby the notches in the sleeve are covered.
2. A spring hinge comprising a pair of leaves having cars, a pintle extending through said ears, a coiled spring surrounding said pintle formed with an extension at each end engaging said leaves, a protecting barrel surrounding said spring and provided with notches for said extensions whereby the extensions may freely move, and a cap on each end of said barrel covering said notches.
3. A spring hinge comprising leaves, a pintle connecting said leaves together, a spring surrounding said pintle and provided with extensions engaging said leaves for urging the leaves in a given direction, a tubular sleeve surrounding the spring and provided with a comparatively long notch in each end for accommodating the movement of said extensions, and a substantially tubular cap on each end of said sleeve having an aperture at the bottom for accommodating the connecting pintle, said caps fitting over said sleeve and provided with openings slightly larger than said projections allow ing a free movement thereof While substanmoving the same to a closed position, a tially closing the opening at the end of said sleeve surrounding said spring provided 10 sleeve. With a notch for accommodating said ex- 4. A spring hinge comprising a pair of tension, and a cap for said sleeve having 5 leaves having bent up ears, a pintle extendan opening substantially fitting the extening through said ears, a spring surroundsion of said spring whereby the notch in ing said pintle formed With an extension at the sleeve is covered. one end engaging one of said leaves for OSCAR KATZENBERGER.
