i Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.V
Application led April 25, 1918. Serial No. 93,502.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, HOWARD H. FLICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehighton, Iin the .county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hair clipper and more particularly to that type of clipper usedl by barbers in trimming the hair at the back and sides of a persons head.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a hair clipper of the class described having connected therewith a. movable comb 'connected with* mechanism arranged between 'the handles of the clipper and operated thereby to swing the comb toward and away from the clipper and to enable an inthe clipper `to obtain the desired taper to the hair at the head.
vide mechanism for imparting swinging movement to the'comb connected with the clipper, which may be arranged between the -handles of the clipperin such a manner that all parts of said mechanism will be exposed to enable the same to be easily sterilized afterthe clipper has been used.
With these and other ob3ects in view, the
I invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter. described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
'The preferred embodiment of the invention has been villustrated in the -accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claim may beresorted to when deslred.
Like characters of reference denote cor- '.responding parts throughout the several views 1n the drawing, in which:
. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hair clipper constructed in accordance wlth the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 showin-g.
the comb in active position. n
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the hair clipper showing the comb 1n contact w1th the body of the clipper.
Referring now to the the numeral 1 designates a hair clipper of the type now in common use having a guard 4 back and sides of the persons l above the 'offset 18 in the arm12 and inter-l Another object of the invention is to proof the head 5,
drawing in detail,
handle 4 disposed beneath ahead 5 provided p with a fixed handle 6.
8 arranged upon opposite sides of a headv 9 ofa comb 10 disposed beneath lthe guard 2 and of substantially the same shape as said guard. The teeth 11 on the comb 10 extendthe entire length of the guard 2 and when said'comb is in inactive position are-adapted to lie against the underface of lthe guard.
The head 9 has formed integral therewith between its ends an arm12 which extends laterally from said head and is offset, as at 13, so that the arm 12 for a portion of its length extends between the handles 4 and 6 of the hair clipper in the rear of the Ihead 5. A coiled expansion Spring 14'is arranged 1 therefrom in the rear of the arm 12 and is provided with a bearing vstud 16 upon which is mounted to turn a cam wheel 17.
' The cam wheel 17 isl provided with a curved edge 18 adapted to Contact with the arm 12 above the olfset therein, so that when said wheel is turned about the bearing stud 16 the comb will be turned about its pivotal connection with the guard 2 against the iniuence of the spring 14. c
The cam wheel v17 has formed therein a recess 19 adapted to have positioned therein ,at intervals during the turning movement of the cam wheel, the portion of the arm 12 above the odset 13 therein, to enable the i spring -14 to restore. the comb 10 to its normal position beneath the guard 2 of the hair clipper. l
A yoke l2O is secured to theV handle 6 of the hair clipper` in the rear ofthe bracket 15 and is provided with spaced arms 21, a similar yoke 22 is rigidly connected with the removable corresponding to the arms 21 on the yoke 20.
A lever 24 having angularly extending arms 24 and 24'.Y is fulcrumed at the junction ofthe arms between the arms 21 of the' handle 4 and has spaced arms 23 yoke 22, the arm 24 which is of greater length than the arm 24 isV pivotally connected at its free end with a link 25, said link also having pivotal connection with the arms 23 on the yoke 22, so that when the movable handle 4 is moved toward the fixed handle 6, the lever 24 will be rocked.
A ratchet wheel 27 is secured to'oneface of thecam wheel 17 anda rod 28 extends inwardly from the inner face of the handle 6 between the yoke 20 and bracket-15, said rod having a looped end 29 in which is mounted to slide a bar 30 onel end of which is pivotally connected with an end on the arm 24" on the lever 24, said bar being provided with teethll, said teeth beingv caused to engage with the teeth on ythe ratchet wheel 27 as the lever'24 is rocked by-moveme'nt of the movable handle 4by the loop on the rod 28 which serves as a combined support and guide for the bar.
Through the'above described arrangement of the cam wheel 17, lever 24, and bar 30, it will be seen that the mechanism' for imparting turning movement tothe cam wheel is so arranged that the various parts thereof will at all times come in contact with the sterilizing medium when the hair clipper is placed therein and that the parts of said mechanism are so arranged that they4 may be easily, cleaned without disconnecting the same.
When it is desired' to tr'im the hair at the back and sides of a persons head, the handle 4 is operated! until the upper end of the arm 12 is positioned in the'recess 19in the cam wheel whichl allows the upper face ofv the teeth 11 on the comb to be brought into contact with the underface of the guard 2 through the action of the spring 14.
The comb may now be placed against the neck of the person whose hair is to be trimmed and as the handle 4 is operated to impart sliding movement to the cutting bar as' the clipper is moved upwardly, the ever wheel 27, such lmovementturning the cam wheel 17 and gradually moving the comb` teeth away from the guard 2, so'that-the hairw is cut with the desired taper.
W hen the'cam wheel 17 has been turned vuntil the recess 19 therein registers with the upperend of1 the arm 12, the spring '14 will turn the comb head about its pivotal connection with the guard '2 and cause the .comb to assume its normal position beneath said guard.l
' i From/the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,v
is claimed as new, is; v
In a device of thev class descrlbed, a hair clipper, a comb mounted to swing thereon,
yokes on the arms of'the clipper, a rod on one of said arms having a loop therein,
arms of the clipper are operated including a toothed barv mounted to slide in said loop, a
-24 will be rocked and the bar 30'drawn back- 45 wardly and forwardly across the ratchet,
lmeans for swinging said comb when the lever pivotally connected with `an end of said bar and ulcr'umed upon one of saidu" yokes, and a link Apivotally connected with the other yoke andthe lever.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature HOWARD Hi/.ltlRvl FLICK. Witnesses:
JOHN HAUK, JOHN B. SNYDER.
