of the blade. These guards 16 are especially useful for protection in shaving concave surfaces, such as within the ears, under the arms, and the like. They also act as guards when the device is being used as a hair cutter with the comb-plate adjusted forward. In such cases, these guard-plates 16 are especially useful in preventing cutting by the corners of the blade, in trimming the hair around the ears, and the like.
The thumb-screw 92 may be removed and the handle C substituted therefor, if desired. When the handle is thus used it serves to clamp and hold the blade and comb-plate in place. The handle is shown in such position in Fig. 2. If desired, however, the thumscrew 92 may be used for holding the combplate and blade in place, and the handle C may then be attached to the handle-retaining member 35 and fastened in position on either side of the device, as explained above` thus making the device adaptable for either right-hand or left-hand use.
In describing the device or speakingr of the device, I have referred to the side of the device adjacent to the skin when in use as the bottom and the other side the top; and the forward edge in the cutting movement as front.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in View of the prior art.
I claim:
1. A device of the character set forth, comprising a blade-supporting member having a substantially Hat blade-supporting surface on top with a tapered forward guard edge, a handle-retaining member pivotally mounted on said blade-supporting member, a handle detachably secured to said handleretaining member, a thin safety razor blade adapted to lie on said flat blade-supporting surface with its cutting edge slightly in front of said tapered guard edge, and a comb-plate with teeth on its forward edge adjustably mounted on said blade-supporting member and lying over said blade.
2. A device of the character set forth, comprising a blade-supporting member having a substantially Hat blade-supporting surface on top with a tapered forward guard edge, a handle-retaining member pivotally secured to said blade-supporting member and adapted to swing thru an arc of 180, and a handle adapted to be attached to said handle-retaining member when the same is at either end of its swing, the attachment of said handle to said handle-retaining member also serving to lock the same in position.
JOHN HENRY COWAN.
