I atbzmqg EEK RAY swnav-niaor monivrournirnrmorst runn -Tamera.
To all whom it 'mcm concern.
Be it known that I, RAY a citizen of the United States, res ding at Monmouth, in the 'county of VVarren' and 1 State of Illinois, have invented certa in new and useful Improvements in Feed-IIroughs, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to improvementsin feeding and watering troughs, more parti'eu la'rly todevices of this characterconstructed wholly of metal, and has forone of its objects to'Z improve-the construction and 111- vices of this character.
orease the efficiency and durability of d e- With these and other objects inview, the
in the claims; and in the drawings illustra- I tive of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the improved device;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on theline 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view, with a portion in section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a body portion 10, preferably semi-circular trans versely and of any suitable length and constructed of sheet or plate metal pressed or bent into the required shape. The edges of the body 10 are folded, as shown at 11, to stiffen and strengthen the edges, the edges being connected by a plurality of transverse stays 12 spaced apart and riveted or otherwise secured to the edges 11, as shown at 13. The stays 12 will be attached to the rims 11 at suitable intervals, preferably about 12 inches apart, the number depending on the length of the trough. The body 10 is provided with outer end members 1a with the upper and lower edges directed inwardly, as shown at 1516, the inwardly directed portions being folded to produce two thicknesses of the material, as shown at the left of Fig. 1. By this means, the flange portions 15-16 are materially stiffened and strengthened,
and are riveted or otherwise secured, as shown at 1516, respectively, to the edges 11 and the bottom portion of the body 10. The body 10 is provided with obliquely dip Speciffic ati onof Letterszf atenti" rammed eats 19a.
Aii pli a'tidxtfiled Aug st 10, 1916'. Serial no; 11452541 rected channels or grooves '18 at the ends,
the channels or roovesbeing roduced by a suitableimplement or heading tool or machine in the-material of the body;
Inserted within the channels 18' are inner end members; represented-at 19, the upper edges of the' members 19 being seated in the" space between theaujacentendfithefoldect over portions 15 and formed"suifieientlylarge toprovide for "springing the member 19 into; the channel-I82 By this' neans the members "19 are held firml their seats in the channels. If the trough is to be employed rem iqaia foods, the innin s or sloping members 19 will be soldered or otherwise rendered liquid tight relative to the body 10. The inner inclined or slo ing end members 19 perform a threefold function. First, they materially increase the strength of the trough; second, they coact with the outer end members 14 to resist the effect of concussions and jars and prevent injury from that source, and third, the upwardly and outwardly sloping forms of the inner end members prevent injury to the trough from frozen or partly frozen liquids.
All of the parts of the improved trough are of metal as light as possible consistent with the strains to which they will be subjected when in use, and may be manufactured almost entirely of machinery, thus decreasing the cost of manufacture and the labor necessary to assemble the parts. The improved trough is strong and durable, while at the same time, light and easily transported or shipped.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. Afeed trough comprising a body hav-. ing laterally directed side flanges, outer end members with flanges overhanging the body and engaging the side flanges of the same, said body having inwardly opening channels near the ends directed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the body and terminating beneath the overhanging flanges of the ends, fastening devices operating through the flanges of the ends and of the body, and inner end members engaging in said channels and between the end members and the flanges thereof.
2. A feed trough comprising a body having outer end members with flanges overhanging the body, said body having inwardly opening channels near the ends directed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the body and terminating beneath the overhanging flanges, and inner end members engaging in said channels and between the flanges and the outer end members.
8. A feed trough comprising a body, outer end members engaging the body with the upper edges of each end member directed at right angles to the ends to form an overhanging flange with the inner portion of each flange folded upon itself to form a stop, said body having inwardly opening channels directed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the body and terminating beneath the flanges, and inner end members engaging at one edge between said stops and the outer end members with the remainder of the inner end members engaging respectively in said channels. a
4:. A feed trough comprising a body, outer end members with flanges overhanging the body and forming stops, and inner end mem- Copies oi this patent mav be obtained for bers bearing against the interior of the body and directed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the same, the upper edge of the inner end member engaging between the outer end member and the stop of the same.
' 5. A feed trough comprising a body having laterally directed side flanges, I outer end members with flanges overhanging the body and engaging the side flanges of the same, inner end members bearing against the interior of the body and directed obliquely to the longitudinal plane of the same, the upper edge of the inner end member engaging between the outer end member and the stop of the same, fastening devices operating through the flanges of the ends and of the body, and means for fastening the obliquely directed inner end members to, the body.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
