Description

O. G. FENLASON.
VENEER BOX.
APPLICATION FILED JULY31,1911.
1,047,024, 1 Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
ORIN Q. FENLAQN, F HOQUIAM, WASHINGTON.
,. Application filed July To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORIN C. FENLASON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiarm; in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful- Veneer Box, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in I veneer boxes for berries, fruit, vegetables, etc. i
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of veneer boxes,
' having a body port-ion consisting of a single strip of veneer of suflicient length to form four sides or walls of two plies or thicknesses' in the manner shown and described in Patent No. 912,101, granted to me Feb.
9, 1909, and to provide simple and eflicient means for enabling the bottom to be firmly and securely fastened between" the plies 0r thicknesses oftwo of the opposite walls. ,or
sides, whereby the body of the box will be reinforced, stifi'ened and strengthened, and
, the plies spaced. to" permit an easy insertion of'the flaps 'of the cover;
With these and otherobjects in view, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the. claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from. the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 4
In the drawing': -Figure 1 isa perspective view of a veneer box, constructedvin accordance with this invention, the cover being shown ready for attachment. Fig. 2

the cover being applied thereto.

veneer. The overlapped portions are located adjacent to one of the corners of the body of the box, and the scoring of the veneer at the corners of the same enables at an inclination to avoid splitting the I the body to collapse, so that it may be compactly arranged for shippingor'storing.
The bottom 5 of the box is adapted to be applied to thebody by the produce shipper or other user, and it is provided-,at'its ends with ,npwardly extending attaching portions 6, inserted between the inner and outer plies or thicknesses 7 and 8 of the opposite sides or wallsof the body portion of the box. The attaching flaps or portions 6 are of a length to, extend upward from the bottom of the box to the upper edges of the sides or walls, and the bottom consists of a single piece of veneer scored transversely to form sides or walls of the body, and the attach the said attaching portions or fla s 6. The bottom is arranged at the lower e gesof the ing portions or flaps are secured'to the inner,
plies or thicknesses 7 by metallic clips 9, constructed of narrow sheet metal and adapted to be applied by the produce shipper or user of the box. The metallic clips 9, which are depending flaps 10 of a cover 11.' The metallic clips may be applied by means of a hammer-without any other tool or machine, and the cover 11 and the flaps 10 consist of a singlestrip or piece of veneer, scored transversely to permit the terminal portions'to be bent downward to form the flaps 10. The flaps 10 are preferably tapered to enable themto be easily inserted between the outer plies or thicknesses 8 and the attaching flaps or portions 6. The metallic clips firmly secure the bottom to the body, and it is unnecessary to extend the bottom' flaps around the upper edges of the sides or walls, and only a minimum amount of material is consumed in the manufacture of the bottom. Also the attaching of theflaps to the inner plies or thicknesses serves to stiffen theop-' posite walls and ncreases the strength and durability of the box. 1
Having thus'fnlly described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A veneer box including a body having walls composed of a plurality oi plies or thicknesses of veneer, a bottom having attaching portions inserted from the bottom upwardly between the plies or thicknesses of the opposite walls of the body, and clips straddling the inner plies or thicknesses of such walls and the attachingportionsof the bottom and securingthe said parts together, whereby the body of the box is reinforced,
stiflen'ed and strengthened.
thicknesses 0 2. A veneer box including a body having walls composed of a plurality of plies or veneer, a bottom provided with a-ttachin flaps inserted from thebottom upwardly between, the inner and outer plies 'or thicknesses of the opposite walls of the body and extending upwardly to the up-- per edges of such walls-and having their upper edges in flush relation with the inner plies or thicknesses of the said walls, and ap proximately U shaped metallic clips straddling the upper edges of the inner plies or thicknesses and the attaching flaps and securing the parts together.
'3. A veneer box including a body having walls composed of a plurality of plies or thicknesses of veneer, a bottom provided with attaching flaps inserted from the bottom upwardly between the inner and outer plies or thicknesses of the opposite walls of the body and" extending upward to the upper ing flaps and securing the parts together and spacing the outer plies or thicknesses from the attaching portions to permit the easy insertion of the flaps of the cover.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, 'ORIN o. FENLASON.
