RATCHET PLOW.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 28.1916.

PLOW.
Application filed. November 28, 1916.
To all whom it may 0077.667f7t.
Be it known that I, THEODORE R. BANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, in the county of Emanuel-and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows of that general class or type in which provision is made for effecting relative adjustment between the plow beam and the plow standard for the purpose of gaging the depth to which the plow blade should be permitted to enter the ground.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and improved device capable of being readily attached to an ordinary plow, and whereby the desired adjustment may be effected in a convenient and superior manner.
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved attachmentwhereby the standard of a plow may be rocked and secured at various adjustments.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plow embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional detail view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hand lever and connecting braces detached from the plow.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved device comprises a hand lever 15 at the lower end of which is formed a housing 16 for a spring actuated stop member 17, which latter may be retracted Specification of Letters Patent.

against the tension of its actuating spring 18 by means of a bell crank 19.
Bolted or otherwise secured 011 the two side faces of the housing 16 are connecting braces 20 that extend downwardly with respect to the lever, each of said braces being provided with upper and lower slots 21, 22. Fitted in the upper slots 21 are bolts 23 having round heads 24. that constitute antifriction members and tightening nuts 25. Extending through the bottom slots 22 of the two connecting braces is a clamp bolt 2 A is a saddle member which is provided with terminal stop shoulders 27,, 28 at its front and rear ends, said saddle having an intermediate arcuate portion 29 which is provided with recesses 30 adapted to be engaged by the stop member 17 of the hand lever 15. The side walls of the saddle member A are provided with arcuate flanges 31 following the contour of the arcuate intermediate body portion of the saddle member.
The device has been shown as applied to an ordinary plow of which E designates the beam, C, the handles and D, the standard, the latter being of well known bifurcated type, and said standard being connected with the plow beam near the rearward end of the latter by an obliquely disposed brace 32. The limbs of the bifurcated standard are connected with the connecting braces 16 by means of bolts 23 and 26, said bolts being adjustable in the slots 21 and 22 so as to permit the device to be attached to plow beams of various dimensions. The uppermost bolts 23 are tightened in such a position that their heads or anti-friction portions 2 1 will engage and ride upon the arcuate flanges 31 of the saddle member. The bolt 26 is engaged and pressed in a downward direction by means of a flat spring 33. The saddle member A. is secured in a proper position on the top face of the plow beam by means of fastening members, such as ordinary wood screws 34. The parts are secured in assembled relation by means of a tail nut 35 on the clamp bolt 26.
It will be seen that by loosening the tail nut on the clamp bolt the handle lever 15 may be utilized for the purpose of rocking the standard with respect to the beam, varying the angle therebetween and relatively raising or lowering the nose of the beam, as may be required for the purpose of gaging the depth, it being obvious that previous to such rocking movement the spring actuated stop member 17 will be disengaged from the recess 80 in the saddle member engaged thereby, another of said recesses being engaged when the proper adjustment has been effected. The tail nut will then be tightened on the clamp bolt 26, thereby securing the parts very firmly in adjusted position.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, a beam, a bifurcated standard, a brace connecting the beam with the standard, an arcuate saddle supported 011 the beam and having recesses, terminal stops and laterally extending arcuate flanges, a hand lever having a stop member engaging the recesses in the saddle, connecting braces secured on the side faces of the lever, said braces having upper and lower slots, bolts extending through the upper slots and through the limbs of the bifurcated standard, said bolts having anti-friction heads engaging the arcuate flanges of the saddle,
and a clamp bolt extending through the lower slots of the connecting braces and through the limbs of the bifurcated standard beneath the beam, said clamp bolt having a tail nut whereby the parts may be tightly secured in assembled relation.
2. In a device of the class described, a beam, a bifurcated standard, a brace connecting the beam with the standard, an arc uate saddle supported on the beam and having recesses, terminal stops and laterally extending arcuate flanges, a hand lever having a stop member engaging the recesses in the saddle, connecting braces secured on the side faces of the lever, said braces having upper and lower slots, bolts extending through the upper slots and through the limbs of the bifurcated standard, said bolts having anti-friction heads engaging the arcuate flanges of the saddle, and a clamp bolt extending through the lower slots of the connecting braces and through the limbs of the bifurcated standard beneath the beam, said clamp bolt having a tail nut whereby the parts may be tightly secured in assembled relation; in combination with a spring secured to the beam and pressing downwardly on the clamp bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
THEODORE R. BANKS.
