SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 540,711, dated June 11 1895. Application filed March 30, 1895- SerialNo. 543,856. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN C. BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Columbia and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Plow- Stock, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in plows; and has for its object to provide a landside which is adapted to have adjustable connection with the lower end of the stock and at the same time provide an extended bearing surface to receive shovels of various shapes and enable the latter to obtain a firm purchase against lateral tipping when the plow is in effective service.

A further purpose of the invention is to provide positive means for connecting the shovels of different shapes to the stock, whereby they will be held securely against any accidental displacement in the operation of the plow.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the reference numerals thereon, taken in connection with the following description.

Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a plow of ordinary construction, showing the application of the invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the means for securing the shovel to the stock. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the improved landside. Fig.4 is a top plan view of the landside. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the brace which is mounted upon the bolt that connects the shovel to the stock and which has a cross-head to extend over the upper edge of the said shovel to secure the same from vertical displacement.

The plow beam 1, handles 2, and stock 3 may be of any desired construction and arrangement, and the said stock is braced in the ordinary manner by means of the stay at. The stock is composed of similar members 5, between which the beam 1, stay 4, and vertical portion f the landside 7 are secured.

The landside 7 comprises an upwardly-extending portion 6 and a horizontal bar 8, the latter having lateral flanges 9 at its lower edge to obtain an extended bearing upon the soil. These flanges 9 taper to the sides of the bar 8 at the front end of the latter so as to offer no resistance to the advancement of the plow, and gradually widen toward the rear end of the bar so as to provide a broad shoe for the landside to run upon. The upwardlyextending portion 6 has laterally-extending flanges 10 which gradually taper from the up- .per end of the portion 6 to the sides of the bar Sand form a broad seat for the shovel 11, which may be single or double and have any shape usually given to the southern plow points, or shovels, used in the various sections of the country. The inner sides of the flanges l0 bear upon the front edges of the members 5 of the plow stock, thereby dividing the strain equally upon the said members.

A longitudinal slot 12 is formed in the upwardly-extending portion 6 of the landside and receives a fastening bolt 13, by means of which the said landside is adjustably clamped between the lower end portion of the plow stock members. When it is required to adjust the landside vertically, the fastening bolt 13 is loosened, thereby permitting the landside to be moved to the required position, when, by tightening the said bolt 13, it will be held in the located position.

The shovel 11, which may be of any desired pattern or form according to the nature of the Work for which the plow is designed, is secured to the stock my means of a fastening bolt 14 and a hand nut 15, the bolt passing through an opening in the shovel and between the members of the plow stock. A fastening brace 16 is curved in its length, and has a cross head 17 at its front end to extend over the upper edge ,of the shovel 11, and has its rear end provided with an eye 18, through which the threaded portion of the fastening bolt let passes. The cross head 17 obtains an extended bearing on the upper edge of the shovel and prevents the latter turning on the bolt 14.

It must be remembered that the various forms of shovels differ in size, and to the end that the landside may be successfully used with each it is necessary that it be capable of vertical adjustment so that the lower side of the bar 8 may be approximately in the same horizontal plane with the cutting edgeof the shovel, which is essential to the successful operation of any plow. It will be seen that the means herein set forth attain the desired result in a simple and eifective manner;

7 and that a broad seat is provided for the shovel so as to brace the latter when in operation in opening or turning a furrow.

In order to adapt the invention to the various styles of plows now in use and attain successful results, it is obviousthat changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may beresorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination of a plow stock and a shovel, of a landside having an upwardly-extended portion provided with a longitudinal slot and laterally-extending flanges which are adapted to bear upon portions of the stock disposed on each side of the said upwardlyextended portion, and which form a broad seat for the sbovehthe lower edge portion of the horizontal bar having lateral flanges to provide an extended surface for the-landside to travel upon, and a fastening bolt to adjustextending flanges, and having a slot, a fastening bolt passing through the members of the stock and the slotted portion of the landside to adjustably clamp the latter between the said members, and means for securing the shovel to the stock and upon the flanged portion of the landside, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
