PAPER SALT AND SPICE SHAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2st, 1917.
Application filed February 29, 1916. Serial No. 81,202.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FUKU'IARO ISHIKAWA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at #8114 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Salt and Spice Shakers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to salt and spice shakers and particularly to such shakers as are made of paper or other absorbent material.
The object of my invention is to produce a salt and spice shaker wherein the atmospheric conditions will not have the usual annoying elfect upon the salt or spice contained within the shaker.
Another object of the invention is to pro duce a cheap shaker for salt and spices.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a salt and spice shaker which can be easily constructed with a minimum amount of parts and operations.
With the above objects in view my invention consists in providing a salt and spice shaker formed of paper or other absorbent material.
The invention further consists in parts and combination of parts of such shaker all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I, is an isometric view of my invention.
Fig. II, is a sectional view of the said invention showing the detailed construction of the body portion of the shaker.
Fig. III is a sectional view showing the manner of forming the cap or sifter head of the shaker, and
Fig. IV, is a cross section of the body portion showing the details of construction thereof.
1 represents an outer layer of absorbent material, preferably paper, and 2 represents an inner layer of absorbent material, preferably paper. These two layers, 1 and 2, are held together with a suitable adhesive material 3. The outer layer has its meeting edges 4:, 4:, in a different radial position than the meeting edges 5, 5 of the inner layer 2. The outer layer 1 is shorter than the inner layer 2 thereby forming a shoulder 6 at the A bottom 7 end of said shaker upper portion of the shaker. is attached to the lower and is secured thereto by means of an it. shaped band having the portion 8 adhered to the layer 1 and the portion 9 adhered to the said bottom 7 by means of suitable adhesive material, 10.
The sifter head of the shaker is formed of an outer layer 11 and an inner layer 12 secured together by means of a suitable adhesive material 13 and so formed that the meeting edges 14 of the outer layer 11 are at a different radial point than the meeting edges 15 of the inner layer 12. The said outer layer 11 is longer than the said inner layer 12; thus a seat 16 is formed interior of said sifter head. The sifter proper is formed of a disk 17 provided with orifices l8, 18, of the desired size. The said disk 17 is held in position in said sifter head by means of an L shaped band, the portion 19 thereof adhering to the outer layer 11 and the portion 20 thereof adhering to the said disk 17 by means of a suitable adhesive material 21.
With the invention constructed as above set forth it will be seen that the shakers may be made up very cheaply as the material used and the operations necessary for forming such a shaker are so figured that the manufacturing price is very small.
During certain atmospheric conditions it is well known that salt and spices, salt in particular, will be affected by the dampness and congeal into a solid mass thus making it a very annoying proposition to try to shake the contents from the shaker. l Vith this invention the paper or other absorbent material used as a body lying adjacent the contents of the shaker will act as a moisture absorbing medium thereby drawing any moisture from the contents and leaving the contents perfectly dry and the particles separated free to be sifted from the shaker without otherwise disturbing said contents. This invention eliminates the necessity of providing mechanical devices for disintegrating the salt or spices within a shaker.
While I have set forth a certain detailed construction which at the present time appears to be best adapted I do not wish to be limited to these details except in so far as the annexed claim may limit me.
Having thus described my invention, what I wish to claim is:
A salt and spice shaker comprising a main 'body portion, EL'CitP said main body portion and provided with ase-at, thesaid Qshoulderend said seat-corresponding in size and contour soes to form a seal between said cap and said main body portion, said cap provided withQa series of formed 'oounterlike x to orifices through which the contents of said shaker may be sifted.
Signed ,at :CleVela nd, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio this 20th day February; 1916.
