' Application filed September 10, 1915. Serial No. 49,851.
To all-whom et'may concern:
Be it known that 1, Joan" Pnomonn, a a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee 5 and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Mouthpieces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention is directed to new and useful improvements in mouth pieces for cigars and particularly to mouth pieces of that type such as are adapted to be associated with cigars during the manufacture thereof, although the invention is also applicable to mouthpieces which are adapted to be associated with finished cigars.
It is primarily the object of the present invention to provide a mouth piece which is of such a simple structure that it may be manufactured at an exceedingly low cost and which maybe associated with a cigar during its manufacture in a manner necessitating the least possible amount of labor.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide in such a mouth piece an exceedingly simple nicotin absorbing member which may be applied to the mouth piece in a novel and very. ready manner, and which is firmly held within the mouth portion against possible displacement due to the suction strain imparted thereto in smoking the cigar.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, ar-' rangeme'nt and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a cigar having with during the manufacture of the cigar, with portions of the mouth piece and cigar broken away to more clearly show the structure and method of assembling the parts.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the p mouthpiece is shown as comprising a tubular body por i n 5 which m y if desired member may beformed of any c1gar..
the flared portion 7 of the holder.
the improved mouth piece associated therebe flattened to facilitate gripping by the teeth and which has one end rolled outwardly to form a retaining bead 6. The other end of the body member is taperingly enlarged at 7 and shaped to receive one end of the bunch portion of a cigar. This body desirable material which is sufliciently' strong to be gripped by the teeth and to support the to remove the nicotin and other objectionable matter therein, and to prevent any portion of the bunch from getting into the portion 5' of the holder, a patch 8 formed of muslin cloth or other absorbing material is provided in the inner end of the flared portion 7, and is held in place by gluing its outwardly folded peripheral edge 9 to the wall of the holder.-
Fig. 2 shows the exceedingly ready method of attaching this filter patch, wherein there is provided a tool including a shank 10 having one end taperingly reduced at 11 to correspond to the taper of the portion 7 of the body at the place where the folded edge 9 is secured. In operation, the filter patch is placedon the end of the tool 10 with its folded edge 9 projecting therepast and coated with suitable adhesive material. The tool is then inserted in the holder and the beveled portion 11 presses the folded edge against the inner wall of the portion 7 to assure their proper attachment thereto.
In associating a cigar with this holder, the bunch 12 is first formed and inserted:
e wrapper 13 of the cigar is then applied to the bunch and to the flared portion of the holder,'the usual gum employed for secur-.v
ing it to the bunch also securing it to the holder. Thus the holder is held partly by the insertion of the bunch therein and partly by the attachment of the wrapper thereto, and it is further noted that the inner end To filter the smoke. as it passes through the holder,
portion of the bunch fits within thefolded edge 9 of the filter patch whereby said folded edge of the filter patch isfirmly confined between the bunch and the flared portion 7 of the holder, to prevent possible displacement of the filter patch due to the suction strain imparted to the patch in smoking the cigar, in view of the fact that saliva or other moisture might occur within the holder .to somewhat loosen the paste engagement of the patch therewith. This holdm function of the lunar end of the bunch y reatoo I llltl 7 son of its insertion within the annular folded edge of the patch is rendered more positive by the slight percentage of moisture and paste or glue which is contained by the binder of the cigar bunch.
The particular advantages oi? associating a holder with a cigar this manner are well known, but it is well to state briefly that such a holder does away with'the necessity of manufacture thereof, it will be readily noted that afinished cigar could be inserted in the flared portion 7 and held by its bindin sided to use the device with a finished cigar. I claim:- ts a new. article of manufacture, a cigar engagement therewith, should it be deinee aoe having an integral month piece comprising a tubular f mouth section merging into a flared portion adapted to receive the tapered end of the cigar bunch, and a filter patchfitting into the flared portion of the mouth piece and having a forwardly folded edge overlapping the cigar bunch end and secured to'the inner surface of the flared portion of said mouth piece whereby said forwardly folded edge is confined between the inner tapered end portion of the cigar and the flared portion of the mouth piece to prevent its displacement, the wrapper of the cigar being thereafter cigar and a portion of the mouth piece to confinethe related parts in position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto setmy hand at llfilwaukee,
in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
I JOHN'PEGHAGEK.
