UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS FEDER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO FEDER BROTHERS,
OF SAME PLACE.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,657, dated January 4, 1898. Application filed August 23, 1897. Serial No. 649,272. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS FEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigars or Cigarettes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to cigars of various kinds; and it contemplates the provision of a cigar embodying an exceedingly cheap and simple mouthpiece and one which is formed and connected to the cigar simultaneous with the application of the spiral tobacco wrapper to the same.
WVith the foregoing end in view the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of that type of cigar known as a stogie embodying my invention, the same being shown in the process of manufacture. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same when completed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the thin sheet of cedar or other suitable wood which forms the mouthpiece.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates an ordinary stogie-filler.
B indicates the wrapper, of tobacco-leaf, which is of the usual form and is wrapped upon the filler A in the ordinary spiral manner, and 0 indicates the thin sheet or piece of cedar or other suitable wood of which the mouthpiece D of the stogie is preferably formed.
In forming the stogie or other type of cigar embodying the mouthpiece D the wrapper is applied to the filler up to the point illustrated in Fig. 1.
then interposed between the wrapper and the filler, as shown, and the said piece of wood is One end of the sheet of wood 0 is rolled so that its opposite end comes upon the outside of the wrapper, as illustrated. The application of the wrapper is then continued to the mouth end of the stogie, and said wrapper is pasted or secured in the ordinary manner, when it will be seen that the sheet of wood will be secured in its coiled form between the wrapper and the filler and also between the layers of the wrapper, as shown in Fig. 2. A mouthpiece D,such as shown and described, when formed and embodied in a stogie or other type of cigar during the working of the same adds but little if anything to the cost of making and the cost of material entering into the cigar. While this is so, the mouthpiece D insures afree smoke-passage through the month end of the stogie or other type of cigar and prevents disintegration of such end when in the mouth of a smoker, thus rendering the stogie or other type of cigar more desirable and salable.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the mouthpiece D is a separate element from the wrapper and is not connected to the wrapper or to the filler, being simply held in position by the interposition between the wrapper and filler and also between the layers of the wrapper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described cigar comprising the filler, the spiral tobacco wrapper, and the mouthpiece formed by a thin sheet of wood wrapped with the wrapper about the filler at the month end of the cigar and interposed between the wrapper and filler and between the layers of said wrapper whereby it is secured in position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflfiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARCUS FEDER.
