BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-12,1917- LQBZQW. Patented July 3,1917.
ELLIS B. BURBELL, F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1917.
Application filed anuary 12, 1917. Serial No. 142,096.
'Z.- all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLIs B. BURRELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the dauber.
the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates broadlyto improvements in that class of inventions known as brushing and scrubbing and more particularly has reference to a kit preferably though not necessarily adapted for shoe blacking purposes.
As the primary aim and object the present invention contem latesthe provision of a novelly constructed brush body for removably receiving a blacking brush or dauber and a blacking container, the latter being arranged in the body to prevent withdrawal of the dauber or accidental displacement thereof, novel means being also arranged in the body to act on the dauber and consequently hold the container in position.
It is an additional and equally important object of this invention to provide novel means on the dauber for alining the container with the large side opening in the body, when the handle of the dauberis moved inwardly, thus permitting of the container being removed from the body and consequently permitting of the removal of Among the other aims and objects of the present invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the numberfof parts-are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims, forming a part of this specification.
The preferred embodiment of the present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention showing the parts in position.
Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal central section of the brush body, showing the dauberand container in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 4 is a horizontal longitudinal section taken on line M of Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings I provide a rectangular brush body 1, the under surface of which is provided with a plurality of recesses 2 for receiving brush bristles 3.
With a view toward forming the body hollow I provide an inwardly extending longitudinal channel 4 from one end, the channel terminating short of the opposite end 5 of the body while the upper surface of the channel is inclined as at 6 toward the open end thereof for a purpose that will presently appear. The channel is enlarged adjacent the inner end to provide a substantially circular chamber 7 while one side of the body is provided with a large rectangular opening 8 which communicates with the chamber for a purpose that will presently appear. A coil spring 9 is mounted in the inner end of the channel adjacent the bottom thereof and has one end acting. against the closed end 5 of the body for a purpose that will presently appear.
As intimated, I employ a dauber which in the present instance consists of a brush head 10 having a handle 11 eXtendin there from and terminating in a finger piece 12. The handle of the dauber is relatively flat and is receivable in the channel 1 in such a manner that the sides thereof are arranged in close relation with the sides of the dauber.
The inner end of the brush head 10 of the dauber is arranged to engage the outer end of the spring and the dauber is pressed against the spring to permit of the insertion of the blaclring container 13 through the opening 8 so that it may be received in the chamber 7 and be positioned above the handle 11. The handle is now released which permits the spring to force the container into frictional contact with the inclined surface. As is apparent because of the arrangement of the container within the chamber and between the inclined surface 6 and the brush head 10 it is impossible to with draw the dauber and at the same time ac c dental displacement and also rattling or the parts is prevented. A lug 14: is formed on the upper surface of the handle and is arranged adjacent the container so as to engage the container when the handle is pressed inwardly against the tension of the spring whereby to aline the container with the rectangular opening 8. Obviously the container can be readily displaced from the chamber and through the opening 8 when one finger of the user is passed through the finger receiving opening 17 in the opposite side of the body. Subsequent to the dis placement of the container 13 the dauber may be readily removed. When the user has finished with the dauber and container they may be readily replaced and thus safely retained until there is a further need for them.
It is thought that from the foregoing description that a detailed description of the operation is unnecessary. Likewise it is thought that the advantages of this invention will be readily apparent. Attention, however, is especially directed to the peculiar cooperation existing between the various parts.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appendedclaims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
It is to be understood that the blackening box may have a loose cover and also that either wool, felt or other material may be used for polishing in lieu of a bristle brush.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: v v
1. A kit of the character described including a hollow body having one end open, the upper surface of theinside of the body beinginclined toward the open end, one side of the body being provided with an enlarged opening, a spring mounted in the inner end of the body, a dauber embodying a brush head and a handle adapted to be received in the body and held against the tension of the spring, a container adapted to be received in the side opening and maintained in frictional engagement with the inclined surface when the dauber is released for preventing withdrawal of the body, and a lug on the dauber handle for alining the container with the side opening when the dauber is moved against the tension of the spring to permit of the withdrawal of the container.
2. A kit of the character described including a hollow rectangular body having one end open, the upper surface of the inside of the body being inclined toward the open end, one side of the body being provided with an enlarged rectangular opening, the opposite side of the body being provided with a finger receiving opening, a spring mounted in the inner end of the body, an element receivable in the body, a handle projecting therefrom for facilitating the holding of the element against the tension of the spring, another element receivable in the rectangular side opening in the body and arranged above the handle and. adjacent the first mentioned element and held in frictional engagement with the inclined surfaces of the body to prevent withdrawal of the first mentioned element when the handle is released, and a lug formed on the handle and arranged adjacent the second element for moving the second element into registration with the enlarged rectangular opening.
3. A kit of the character described in cluding a body adapted to receive brush bristles on the under surface thereof, the body being provided with a longitudinal channel extending from one end and adapted to receive a dauber, the sides of the channel being enlarged to provide a chamber, the top of the channel being inclined toward the open end, one side'of the body being provided with an enlarged rectangular opening communicating with the chamber while the opposite side is also provided with a finger receiving opening connecting with the chamber, a blacking container adaptedto be passed through the enlarged'opening and ar ranged in the chamber, a spring mounted in the inner end of the channel and adapted to force the dauber outwardly and consequently move the container into frictional contact with the inclined surface to retain the parts in position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
