Description

R. J. BROWNING. BRUSH DEVICE FOR REGBPTAGLES.
AITPLIOATION FILED NOV. 16, 1912.
- Patented Apr. 7, 1914.
RAY J'. BROWNING, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRUSH DEVICE FOR RE CEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. '2', 1914;.
Application filed November 16, 1912. Serial No. 731,859.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY J. BROWNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVillia-insport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brush Devices for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for supporting brushes in receptacles, so that the brush proper may extend to the proper depth in a substance in the receptacle, such as mucilage, glue, or the like.
The main object of my invention is to provide means for sustaining the brush so that the same will only extend into the substance to the desired extent to prevent the parts of the brush other than the bristles being brought into contact with the substance.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the brush may be supported at various depths within the receptacle so that the same may be adjusted to the desired extent upon the diminution of the substance.
The invention resides in the details of construction of the means or device illustrated in the accompanying drawings; specific objects of the invention becoming apparent as the description of said drawings follows hereinafter.
In said drawings :Figure l is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating the brush device in connection with a receptacle, fragmentarily shown. Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section specifically illustrating the form of spring employed and its connection to the several parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the receptacle showing the spring employed, the sleeve and brush stem being shown in section, and Fig. 4 is a cross sec tional view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1.
In the drawings like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a receptacle adapted to contain a liquid or other substance such as mucilage, or glue, and 2 designates the screw cap or cover for the receptacle. The cap 2 is provided with a central opening, and a tube or sleeve 3 is secured therein preferably centrally of its length. Said tube is preferably soldered to the cap, but it is obvious that it may be attached in any desired manner. Through the opening in the cap and hollow portion or longitudinal opening of the sleeve, slidably passes a stem or shank l, preferably round in cross section of a brush member. Said shank, at the lower extremity thereof is flattened as at 5 and secured thereto is a brush head 6, having secured thereto bristles 7 The head 6 may be made of tin or other suitable metal and is designed to be bent Or clenched around the flattened or noncircular end 5 of the shank 4. At the opposite end, the stem or shank 4 is preferably pointed as at 8, which point is adapted to be driven into a suitable handle 9 such as one of wood, or rubber, to rigidly connect the handle to the stem or shank.
The shank or stem 4: is provided with a plurality or series of notches 10. Sleeve 3 is slotted as at 11 to accommodate the reception of a spring wire 12. The slot of the sleeve is of such depth or extent as to permit the wire 12 to pass into the same sufficiently far to engage the notches 10. The spring 12 is fastened to the cap 2 in any suitable manner as by passing its ends through enlarged openings 12 in the cap and clenching the same interior of and against the cap as at 13.
In use the brush member is located or positioned in the receptacle 1 at the proper depth through the engagement of spring wire 12 with one of the notches 10 thereof. In this way the brush member may be positioned at the depth desired for the engagement of the bristles with the substance contained in the receptacle. As the substance diminishes, the brush member may be lowered or adjusted by bringing another of the notches 10 into position to be engaged by the spring wire 12. When the rod 4 is to be slid through the sleeve 3, the stem is turned so that the portion of the shank in the rear thereof'will bear against the spring 12 and thereby force the same downwardly and into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. Thereupon the shank is free to slide through the opening. When the desired position for the shank has been reached, the stem 4 is again turned so that the proper notch 10 will be brought into position where the spring wire 12 will clip thereinto, thus looking or fastening the same to the sleeve in such manner as to prevent movement of the same independently or relatively to the sleeve or cap.
Suitable means may be provided in the receptacle to engage the bristles as the brush is Withdrawn from the receptacle or against which the brush may be wiped after detachment from the receptacle, to Wipe off or remove any surplus substance thereon. Said means may consist of a substantially segmental plate 14 fastened to and projecting interiorly from the receptacle 1; the plate at its inner extremity or part adjacent the brush member being preferably curved or arcuate as at 15.
As merely the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, and as changes in the details of construction may suggest themselves, such changes, provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims are reserved.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination With a receptacle, a cap, a brush device extending into said receptacle having a turnable stem passing through said cap provided With a transverse notch extending only partly around the same, and a spring member on said cap extending into said notch, said spring movable out of said notch by the portion of said stem in the same transverse plane With said notch upon turning movement of the stem.
2. In combination With a receptacle, a cap, a sleeve on said cap, a'brush device extending into said receptacle having a stem passing through said sleeve provided With series of notches provided thereon, said sleeve having a slot, a spring member fastened to said cap, and extending into said 7 RAY J. BROWVNING,
