To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr L. iVALsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to extension window screen constructions, and has particular reference to a screen composed of four sections extensible in two directions.
The object of my invention is to provide a sectional screen which may be extended to occupy the area of an entire window frame and may be contracted to screen only a half section, the screen being also adaptable to windows of difiering widths.
In carrying out my invention I utilize an improved form ofslideway which is stamped and shaped from sheet metal, and with slight changes is used for connecting together all of the screen sections. The metal slide device above mentioned may be combined with either Wood or metal outside frame members, and in the present case, the frames of the sections are described as being a combination of wood and metal. Also, the screen which forms the subject-matter of my invention may be used as an inside screen, even when extended vertically and horizontally to fit the complete window. Vhen set to the vertical height desired, the sections may be locked against further vertical movement, and the screen utilized as the ordinary extension screen for lateral adjustment to the space which it is desired to fill.
With the above objects in View and such other objects as may herein after appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of one of the metal corners. Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent in the case of each of the screen sections, the outside vertical and horizontal frame members, said members being suitably connected bv sliding elements as the tongue and groove connections 3 in order to properly connect the outer edges of the screen. The vertical frame members 1 are provided with suitable clamp screws 4, in order that the vertical adjustment of the screen may be preserved and the screen be extended in vertical adjustment.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the inner sides of the screen sections are formed of shaped metal strips which provide, not only the securing elements for the screening, but slideways which operate with pins formed upon the metal sides of the opposite frame to form the extension elements. Thus, each of the metal sides consist of a wing 5 and a wing 6 which are bent together and are adapted to receive therebetween in clamped relation the screening fabric, and furthermore, includes the wing 7 which is bent backwardly to overlie the wing 6 but stands in spaced relation thereto so as to receive therebetween the locking element or slide bar which is hereinafter described. Each of the wings 7 is longitudinally grooved substantially throughout its length as at 8, said groove separating the wing 7 at one end and terminating at the other end in a widened space 9. The space 9 is formed when the cross bar or slide element is stamped therefrom and turned backwardly upon the curve neck 11 to overlie the wing7, the cross bar 10 forming the connection between the opposing metal side elements, and is adapted to lie in the space 12 between the wings 6 and 7, the neck 11 operating in the groove 8 of the opposing side.
Identifying the four sections of the screen as a, 7), c and d, as indicated, sections a and b are substantially identical with the metal sides or inner sides formed of the grooved strips, which will hereinafter be indicated by the numeral 13. The sections Z) and a differ slightly from the sections a and d by reason of the fact that the longitudinal metal sections 13 of b and c are not provided with the longitudinal grooves 8, the longitudinal grooves in the sections a and d and the cross-bar carried by the sec tionsb and c securely locking the sections together for longitudinal movement.
Thus, section a consists of the wooden outer sides 1 and 2, a vertical side 13 (Fig. 6) having a groove upon its rear face, and a longitudinal side which has a groove or slot 8 upon its upper face. The section b is provided with a vertical grooved mem ber 13 and a longitudinal metal side 13 which is not grooved upon either side but is provided with a cross bar connection 1 1 which extends over the end of the side 13, and beyond the rear face thereof, so as to occupy a slide way in the opposing face of the section (Z as will later appear. In assembling the sections a and b, the slide-way or sides 13 are brought into the relation shown in Fig. 3 before the wooden sides 1 and 2 are assembled by passing the cross bars 10 through the open ends of the grooves 8 and then drawing the cross bars toward one another through the slide ways 12. When the wooden sides are then assembled and the ends of the metal sides 13 are secured to the ends of the upper and lower horizontal sides 2, a half of the screen has been formed.
The sections a and (Z are assembled in a manner identical to the sections in Fig. 3, and it should be remembered that the section 0 is formed with an inner metal side 13' identical with the upper metal side 13* in the section b, that is, a metal side which has no longitudinal groove and which has a pin which is bent over the end of the side a sufficient distance to enter into the slide space in the lower side 13 of the section a. In order to assemble the half screens formed by the associated sections a and b and 0 and (Z respectively, the slide bars 1 1 are entered into a corresponding groove in the sections a and Z) before the vertical sides 1 are placed in position so as to close the outer ends of the grooves or slots. WVhen thus assembled, the sections may be readily adjusted into any horizontal width, without interfering with the vertical adjustment of the sections. Furthermore, the screen may be adjusted to its full or wholly closed position vertically of the device without interfering with the horizontal adjustment thereof, and by means of the clamps 4, any intermediate adjustment of the screen may be obtained.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a window screen, the combination of a. plurality of sections and slide-ways interlocking said sections for relative adjustment, each of said slide-ways consisting of a folded sheet metal strip having a slide space upon one side and a longitudinal groove in said side communicating with said slide space throughout its length, and a cross head formed at one end of each strip and operative in the slide space of the opposite slide-way and having a neck operative in the communicating groove.

In a window screen, the combination of a plurality of sections and slideways interlocking said sections for relative adjustment, each of said slide-ways consisting of a folded sheet metal strip having a slide space upon one side and a longitudinal groove in said side communicating with said slide space throughout its length, and a cross head operative in the slide space of the opposite slide way and having a neck operative in the communicating groove; I

In a window screen, the combination with a plurality of screen sections each having a vertical and a longitudinal metallic side shaped to have a slide-way formed by spaced folds of the metallic side, each side having a longitudinal slot throughout its length and formed in the outer fold, cross heads formed transversely of each side and entered into the slide space of the opposing side through said longitudinal slots, said slide-ways and cross heads being assembled to permit vertical and longitudinal adjustment of the sections.
