WAGON-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1917.
Application filed May 6, 1916. Serial No. 95,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. BURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oresco, in the county of Howard and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is a wagon box and refers more particularly to that type of construction wherein several sections may be connected together or superposed oneupon the other.
One object of the invention is to provide a wagon box that is composed of several interchangeable sections of various capacities adapted to be used upon one wagon running gear.
Another object of the invention is to provide engaging means whereby the several sections may be attached to each other to maintain and hold them secure without folding the several sections together, thus permitting one section to be readily removed.
The invention broadly stated comprises a plurality of interchangeable sections, each of said sections including side boards and end boards, cleats secured upon opposite sides of the side boards, bent stakes secured upon each side of the side boards, the several stakes and cleats cooperating to form engaging means to hold the several sections in their operative positions.
A practical form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled sections;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of three similar sections assembled;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the assembled sections on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. at is a perspective view of a sloping side section showing the separation of the stakes;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a straightsided section showing the cleats on each side of the side boards.
The several sections shown in Fig. 1 will be designated by the letters A, B and C. These several sections include the side boards 6 and end boards 7, which may be formed of any suitable material and of any particular size or shape. The end boards are held in their operative position adjacent the ends of the side boards in any suitable manner, one form of means being shown by the eye bolts 8 which pass through the ends of the side boards and the opposite ends are secured in a suitable manner such as by a nut (not shown).
The several sections as illustrated in Fig. l comprise a variety of shapes and styles. It will be noticed that the lower one is relatively narrow and 'the second section B is sloping or has flaring sides which make it somewhat wider than the bottom section A. The top section C, as shown, is of the same width and length as the section 1) upon which it is placed.
Spaced upon the side boards of section G are suitable cleats 9 and 10 positioned, respectively, upon the opposite sides of the side board. These cleats do not extend to the top edge of the section C, but do extend downwardly a sufficient distance over the side B to thereby hold the top section C secure. Thus, it will be seen that to oppositely positioned cleats such as 9 and 10 are adapted to engage the outer and inner sides of the side boards of the section B.
Secured to the outer surface of the section B are spaced stakes 11. These stakes are so bent that they will conform to the shape of the section B and extending downwardly sufliciently to engage with the straight side of the bottom section A. Upon the inner surface of the section B are positioned the stakes 12 which conform to the inner surface of this section B and each of said stakes 12 is also provided with a downwardly projecting portion to engage with the inner side of the bottom section A. These stakes 11 and 12 are preferably positioned oppositely to each other upon each side of the side boards and are secured together through the side boards in any suitable manner, one form of means being shown by the bolt and nut 13. Secured to the stakes 11 are suitable braces 14:. These braces extend from the lower edge or end of the stake 11 upwardly and are secured to the bent portion of the stake by suitable means, one form being shown by the nut and bolt 15.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, it will be seen how the several cleats overlap the underlying section and operate to hold the several sections into better engagement. In this figure the two central. cleats 9 of the middle section are adapted to pass through and be held by suitable means, such as the straps 16 which are so bent as to form a socket. It is also to be observed in Fig. 1 that the intermediate cleats or stakes 11 of the section B contact with the outer sides of the cleats afiorded by the straps 16, whereby the section B is effectively maintained against independent longitudinal movement in either direction relatively to the section A.-
Minor changes in form and details of construction may lee-resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat is claimed is A wagon box including a bed and side walls secured thereto, supplementary side walls each consisting of two sections one of which is laterally inclined with respect to the other, said sections having abuttingengagement at their contiguous longitudinal edges, strap irons securely fixed to the inner and outer faces of said supplementary side wall sections and tying the same together, said strap irons projecting angularly from the free longitudinal edge of the laterally inclined Wall section and in spaced relation to each other and adapted to receive the side walls of the wagon body between them, whereby the supplementary wall sections may be reinovably mounted in the upper edges of said body walls, and an obliquely inclined brace bar secured to the lower free end of each outer strap iron, the upper'end of the brace bar being secured to the strap iron contiguous to the contacting edges of the supplemental wall sections.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. BURR.
