CLOTHES FASTENER .AND PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 5, 1917.
Application filed August 14, 1916. Serial No. 114,894.
To all 107mm 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Louisa BAGANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of N ew York, State 'of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Fasteners and Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clothes fasteners and protectors, and aims primarily to provide simple and efficient means for supporting clothes upon a clothes line to be dried,
which obviates the use of the usual clothes pins, and which supports the clothes in such manner as to preclude the possibility of tearing of the same. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which is capable of being readily attached to and detached from a clothes line, which is capable of being readily moved to various parts of the line, and in which the weight of the clothes supported by the improved device will be utilized to prevent accidental disengagement or displacement of the device from the line.
A still further and particular object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, which may be easily produced or manufactured, which will prove practically everlasting in use, and which will prove thoroughly efficient in the attainment of the ends for which it is designed.
With these objects in view, together with ot-hers which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best -understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l, is a perspective view of a fastener and protector embodying my invention, the same being shown as applied to a clothes line and supporting clothes, y
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the device removed from the line and in open position,
.- Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken on line 444 of Fig. l. i
Referring now more particularly to the drawings 5 indicates generally the improved fastener and protector, the same being formed preferably of a sheet of canvas, linen or other suitable cloth, the said sheet being preferably rectangular in shape, and is folded upon itself adjacent one of its lateral edges to 'provide a relatively large Hap 6 forming a body portion, and a comparatively narrow flap 7. Adjacent the lowermost edge of the body flap 6 is secured a plurality of buttons S, the said buttons projecting from the innermost face of the said flap, and are secured to the latter in any preferred manner. The flap 7 is provided with loop members 9, the said loop members being secured at one end to the extreme lateral edge of the Hap 7 and to project outwardly therefrom, and each of the loop members is of a size adjacent its juncture with its supporting flap to permitof the insertion of the button 8, and is narrowed toward its outer extremity to engage around the shank or narrower portion of the button. The buttons and loops are adapted'to cooperate with each other in securing clothes to the body 5 of the device, and may be spaced at intervals throughout the extent of the said body.
A retaining leaf or flap l0 is stitched or in any other preferred manner secured along one of its longitudinal edges to the under face of the body portion of the device, the said leaf being located upon the said body portion inwardly from the longitudinal edge of the iiap 7, and to be inclosed by the latter when the device is properly assembled upon a line. the well known pin and socket of a glove fastener or button, are arranged upon the i'iap 6 and leaf 10 respectively to enable the said leaf to be securely and yet detachably held at its outer edges to the flap 6. The leaf 10 is preferably of a length equal to that of the cloth forming the body of the device, and is of relatively narrow width, the said fasteners 11 being spaced at various points throughout the length of the said leaf to afford proper and secure fastening means.
In use, the device is folded over a clothes line with the leaf l0 and Hap 6 inelosing the Cooperating fasteners 11, such as` said line, whereupon the snap fasteners 11 are secured together. Thus, the device is held securely upon the line. The clothes to be dried are then secured at their edges between the buttons 8 and loops 9, the latter being engaged over the cloth covered button head to securely retain the cloth in place. lt is seen from this construction that the weight of the clothes supported by the device is divided equally between the flaps 6 and 7, and the leaf 10 is free of strain. "When the clothes have become dry and are removed from the fasteners, the latter may be left unengaged, and the leaf 10 will retain the device securely upon the line. It is also apparent that the comparative loose 'engagement of the device upon the line enables the same to swing to oscillate thereon Whereby tearing of the cloth supported by the device is entirely obviated, and while. l have herein shown and described a preferred or particular embodiment of the invention, I wish it to be understood that I need not con line myself to all the precise details of construction set forth by way of illustration as modiication and variation may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the l/Jhat is claimed is:
1. ln a device of the class described a body of cloth adapted to be folded upon itself to provide a pair of flaps, buttons on one of said flaps, loops carried by the other of said flaps for engagement with said buttons, and means for securing said body on a clothes line, substantially as described.
2. ln a device of the class described, a body of cloth adapted to be folded over a line to provide wide and narrow flaps respectively, buttons adjacent the extremity of said wide flap, loops carried by said narrow iiap and projecting,` from the extremity of the latter for engagement with said buttons, a leaf formed of cloth secured alongl one edge to the under surface of said body and to the narrower of said flaps, the said leaf being adapted to be covered by said narrow ap, and coperating fastening means upon said leaf and the wider of said flaps, substantially as described. n In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
