GEORGE a. TnYGEsoN, OF ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON.
ADJUSTABLE SECURING DEVICE FOR SHOES, GLOVES, &o.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,1913.
Application filed July'27, 1912. Serial No. 711,915.
To all "LU/LO'YTL 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon R. TnYoEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Securing Devices for Shoes, Gloves, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a means for adjustably fastening a shoe, glove or the like, and it consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts as "will be hereinafter clearly set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The main object of my invention among others is to provide reliably ellicient means whereby the mouth of the shoe may be quickly and adjustably secured so as to take up all slack and leave the shoe disposed in a neat and attractive condition upon the foot without wrinkles or undue fullness.
A further object of my invention among others is to provide permanent means for the shoe which will permit several degrees of adjustment in disposing the shoes tightly or loosely upon the foot, as desired.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter clearly set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application and in which,
Figure 1 shows my invention complete, ready for use as applied upon a shoe of the usual or any preferred construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view showing a portion of the locking strip. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the inner side of the locking strip shown in Fig. 2. Fig. at is a detail. perspective view of one of the hooks permanently located upon the edge of the shoe mouth. F ig. is a sectional view showing my shoe securing device in an adjusted position, and, Fig. (3 is a perspective detail view of a portion of the inner side of the locking strip showing a somewhat varied form of construction from that presented in Fig.
In order to conveniently refer to the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed, the same nume 'al applying to a corresponding part throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a shoe of the usual or any preferred construction having one edge or flap 2 of the shoe mouth provided with a plurality of button holes 3, while the other edge is provided with a plurality of hook like members t, which may be anchored in their respective positions in any desired manner, and designed to cooperate with the hook members 4 is my improved locking strip 5, which upon one side is provided with a plurality of buttons 6 which may be attached in any desired manner and upon the other side of said strip isdisposed a plurality of hook engaging devices or staples 7, arranged paral lel with each other and at different distances from the edge of the flap 2, whereby the hook member may be brought into engagement with any preferred one of said staples, thereby enabling the overlapping shoe edges to be secured relatively at any desired point. It will thus be seen that the outside flap 2 is provided in the usualv man ner with a plurality of button holes and the buttons 6 are extended through said button holes from the inside, as shown in Fig. l, and when once thus disposed in their proper positions, it is not necessary to ever again remove them. The buttons therefore are designed to present the usual appearance of a button shoe and in addition they serve the purpose of carrying the locking strip 5 upon the inner side of the outside flap whereby since a plurality of locking staples 7 are provided upon the inner side of said strip it follows that the overlapping flaps of the shoe are loosely or tightly secured, as may be desired.
It is well known that in the wearing}; of a new pair of shoes. the lrather gradually stretches and if the buttons are permanently secured in position, it is subsequently necessary to readjust said buttons when the leather becomes unduly stretched as to present an untidy appearance or a very loosely fitting shoe top. By the use of my invention, it is only necessary to reset the staples on the hooks linasmuch as all looseness may be taken up and wrinkles removed by entering the hook into the next adjacent inner staple 7.
Obviously, the anchoring staples 7 may be secured to the locking strip in any desired manner as by extending the ends through the same, clenching or upsetting said ends. or if preferred, said anchoring staples may be permanently secured in any suitable way to a carrying plate 8, as shown in Fig. 6 and said plate may be then bodily secured in any desired manner to said locking strip, as by providing the leather engaging tongues 9 upon each end of said plate.
It will be understood that any desired material may be employed in forming the locking strip and other parts and while my invention is especially desirable upon shoes, it may also be used to advantage upon gloves, etc.
By thus providing my special form of securing device for shoes and the like, it is found that the button holes always remain in an unworn and attractive condition which isnot the case where it is necessary to ithdraw and enter said buttons into the button holes each time the shoe is removed and re placed upon the foot. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be clearly seen that my securing appliance will prove thoroughly eflicient in the performance of its office. In Fig. 5, it will also be observed that the anchoring hook t is disposed in engagement with the middle anchoring member 7 and that it might as readily and efficiently be disposed in either of the other anchoring devices. It will also be clearly apparent that any preferred number of anchoring devices 7 may be provided as may be deemed necessary to best meet the requirements and having thus fully described the preferred construction and combination of parts deemed necessary in materializing my invention, 1 wish to comprehend all substantial equivalents and substi' tutes as may e regarded as falling fairly in the scope of my invention.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure is l. A securing device for shoes and the like comprising a locking member provided on its outer face with a longitudinal series of devices adapted to be engaged with the outer fiap of the shoe, and on its inner face with a longitudinal series of sets of fastening dcvices, each set comprising a plurality of such devices located at different distances from the edges of the strip, either of said devices of each set being adapted to engage with a single cooperating fastening device secured upon the outer face of the inner lap of the shoe.
2-. A securing device for shoes and the like comprising a longitudinal series of buttons on its outer face adapted to engage in button holes in the outer flap of the shoe, and on its inner face with a longitudinal series of sets of staples, each set comprising a transversely arranged series of staples at different distances from the edges of the strip, either staple of each series being adapted to be engaged with a hook correspondingly placed on the outer face of the inner flap of the shoe.
3. A securing device for shoes comprising a strip provided with a longitudinal series of buttons 011 its outer face adapted to engage in button holes in the outer flap of the shoe, transverse metal plates secured at intervals to the inner surface of the strip, and a transverse series of loops or staples secured to each transverse metal strip, either of said loops or staples being adapted to engage a hook upon the outer face of the inner flap of the shoe.
4-. A shoe provided with button holes in its outer flap and hooks on the outer face of its inner flap, and an interposed strip provided on its outer face with buttons engaged in said button holes and on its inner face with a transverse series of staples adapted to be engaged upon the corresponding hooks on the inner flap of the shoe.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE R. THYGESON.
