BUTTON AND FASTENING :onvron THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed September 21, 1915. Serial No. 51,739.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it kno-wn .that I, HARRY EDnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented'a new and useful Button and Fastening Device Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a novel-- button and consists more particularly of novel means for securing the button with respect to the garment whereby the necessity of sewing the buttons on the garment is eliminated. I
It further consists of novel means for securing a button to a garment which is constructed in such a manner that the button may be removed when desired.
It further consists of a novel fastening device movably carried by the button and provided with novel means for securing such device in locked position. 7
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter appear in the detailed description. i
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing the preferred embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of whichmy invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the'pre'cise arrangement and organization of these in strumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of "a button having a fastening device embodying my invention in assembled position therewith.
Fig.2 represents a plan view of a locking member in detached position.
Fig. 3 represents a section on linea w of Fig.2. 1 f
Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of a guide member employed. I
Fig. 5 represents a section on Hueyy of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 represents a sectional view of my device showing the manner in which the parts appear during the operation of securing a button to a garment.
Fig. 7 represents a sectional view showing the manner in which the parts appear when the button is assembled with respect to a garment. Y
Fig. 8 represents a bottom plan view of a button having another embodiment of my invention employed in conjunction therewith. Fig. 9 represents a top plan view of the locking member seen in Fig. 8.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: '1 designates a button of any desired or conventional type and for convenience of illustration I have shown a covered button consisting of an outer casing member 2 and an inner casing member 3 the sides of which latter'are laterally deflected,as at 4, and the outer casing member 2 is laterally deflected, as at 5, in order to fit over the member 4. 6- designates the cover which is turned inwardly, as at 7 in order tobe clamped between the flanges 4 and 5 of the casing. 8
designates a: filler of 1 any desired material which may be employed if desired. 9 designates a support or guide plate preferably consisting of an integral piece of material having the prongs lO punched from the body portion of the guide and adapted to pass through the openings 11 in the casing member 3 and be deflected around the walls of said opening, as indicated at 12, said prongs extending nwardly and then rearwardly as order toiinterlock the locking member with free ends of which are pointed, as at 18. In I the guide" 9, I provide interlocking means common to such parts and in the embodiment seen inFigs. Ito-7' inclusive, the guide 9 is provided with an aperture 19 and the locking member 15 has one ofits side walls 16 outwardly deflected to form a lug or projection 20 which interlocks with the walls of the aperture 19, as best seen in Fig. 1.
It is also within the scope of my invention to provide means if desired to interlock both of the side members of the locking member with the guide, as seen in Figs. 8 and 9, it
being seen in Fig. 8 that each side of the guide 9 is provided with an aperture, an additional aperture 21 being shown in Fig. 8, andan additional lug 22 being formed on the other side member 16 of the locking member to interlock with such aperture. Since the other parts of the construction seen in Figs. 8 and 9 correspond to similar parts seen in other figures of the drawing, I have identified them by the same reference characters. 23 designates the garment or fabric to which the button is to be secured.
The manner of securing the button to the garment will be readily understood by those skilled inthis art and is as follows The locking member 15 is moved forwardly into the position seen in Fig. 6 and the garment as seen in said Fig. 6.
the prongs or hooks 17 are passed thro i gh he button is then moved forwardly until the locking member 20 engages the walls of the aperture 19, at which time the hooks 17 are located with respect to the button, as seen in Fig. 7 it being noted that the free ends of the locking member 15 press against the turned-over portion 13 of the guide 9 since the tension of the spring locking member 15 tends to move the hooks laterally. The constructions seen in Figs. 8 and 9 operate in the same manner except that both the side members 16 of the locking member which are guided in'the grooves 14 of the guides interlock with the walls of the apertures on both sides of the guides.
If it is desired to remove the button from the garment it is simply necessary to move the hooks 17 toward each other thereby effecting the release of the means on the looking members which interlock with the'guide, whereupon the button maybe moved with respect to the hooks 17 so that the button may be readily removed, as will be apparent from Fig. 6.
By the employment of my present invention the necessity of sewing the buttons on the garment is entirely eliminated and the buttons are securely held with respect to the garment.
In accordance with my present invention it will be seen that I provide a resilient locking member movab-ly mounted with respect to the button and adapted to be inter locked in position with respect to the button.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful button and fastening device therefor, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the inventionand the above description, and whileI have, in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which will give.
in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spiritor scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. 9
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. The combination with a button, of a support comprising a plate having means to engage the button and its sides laterally deflected to form guide grooves, and a looking member comprising a resilient strip deflected to form side members slidable in said grooves and terminating in portions to engage the garment, one of said side members forming a locking means, and one of said grooves having an aperture in its side wall to receive said locking means.
2. The combination with a button, of a support connected therewith and providedwith uide grooves, one of which has an aperture 1n its wall intermediate its ends, and a look ing member consisting of a resilient strip deflected upon itself to form side walls at one end and hooks at its free ends, and having one of its sidewalls provided with means to interlock with said aperture when the locking member is in its closed position and be retained in locked position by the resiliency of said strip.
3. The combination with a button, of a support connected therewith and provided with guide grooves, each of which has intermediate its ends a lug receiving portion, and a locking member consisting of a resilient strip deflected upon itself to form said side walls having a lug to resiliently interlock with its respective lug receiving portion, said lugs belng dlsengaged from said lug receivlng portions by moving the free ends of the lockingjmember toward each other;
HARRY EDELSON.
