Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, TENN.
Application filed June 9, 1916. Serial No. 102,630.
State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful lm iirovements in Closure and Look Devices for Containers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closure and lock devices for containers of various kinds and classes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class particularly designed for use in connection with milk bottles, and which is adapted to be detachably connected with the head and neck portion of a bottle to prevent the theft thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the aocompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the top portion of a milk bottle showing my improved closure and lock device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but at right angles thereto and with part of the construction broken away;
Fig. 3 a bottom plan view of the closure device showing the same in an open position; and,
Fig. at a view looking in the direction of the arrow w of Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, 1 have indicated at a the neck and head portion of a milk bottle having the usual enlarged beaded portion a and an internal annular rabbet groove a in which is placed the usual closure disk a Placed on the top head and neck portion of the bottle a is a closure and lock device Z), consisting of a cup-shaped casing composed of separate parts Z2 and b hinged together at 12*, and the part b is provided with a tongue member I) which in the closed position of the separate parts overlaps the part 6 as shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted centrally on the pin of the hinge b is an approximately triangular-shaped stop and attaching device 0 provided with beveled sides 0 against which the separate parts b -b of the lock device I) are adapted to bear in their open position as shown in Fig. 3, and said device 0 serves to limit the movement of the opening of said parts. The stop device 0 is provided with an aperture c in which is secured a chain or similar fastening device a which is adapted to be secured to a door frame, window frame or the like where bottles of this class. are usually placed on delivery.
The parts b-b'" of the lock device Z) are preferably lL-shaped in form in cross section and the lower edge portions thereof are provided with inwardly directed beads I) which when the lock device 6 is placed in position prevent the detachment thereof.
The part b of the lock device is provided with a suitable lock member having a key opening CF, and the part Z2 is provided with a finger or plunger member 6 which is adapted to enter an oblong aperture (Z in the lock member (5 and is provided with suitable recesses c which serve to operate in connection with any suitable mechanisms within the lock member cl, it being understood that any desired form of lock member may be em- Secured within the member 6 and preferably the top corner portion thereof is a wire spring 7, the free end of which is curved as shown at f and operates in connection with the corresponding corner portion of the part 6 whereby when the lock is opened by a suitable key the separate parts 6 -42 will be separated by said spring.
In practice, the lock device 5 will be loaned to the purchaser by the dairy concern distributing the milk and will be anchored by means of the chain c or other attaching device to the door frame, window frame or the like where bottles of this class are usually placed on delivery. The milkman or deliverer will place the bottle within the separate parts 6 -5 of the lock device and close the same and, as will be seen in Fig. 2, the bottle a will be secured in the lock device by means of the bead Z) operating in conjunction with the bead a of the bottle. The housewife or purchaser is in possession of a key by means of which the look device 6 may be opened to detach the bottle a therefrom, as will be readily understood, and it will be apparent that the lock device, or the sepa rate parts thereof, are normally open and are only closed when the bottle is inserted therein.
While I have shown and described the device as used in connection with milk bottles,
ployed in connection with the separate parts 2 ba it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this use as the same may be used in connection with containers of any kind or class, and various changes in and modifications of the details of construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
cup-shaped casing composed of separate parts hinged together, the lower edge portions of which are provided with an inwardly directed annular bead, means for locking the separate parts together, means for opening the separate parts when unlocked, means for limiting the extent of the opening of said separate parts, and means connected with said last named means for anchoring said lock device at a predetermined point. 7
3. In a lock device ofthe class described, a cup-shaped casing composed of separate parts hinged together, the lower edge portions of which are provided with an inwardly directed annular bead, means for locking the separate parts together, means for opening the separate parts when an locked, means for limiting the extent of the opening of said separate parts, and means connected with said last named means for anchoring said lock device at a predetermined point, one of the separate parts of said casing being provided with a tongue member which overlaps the other part oi said casing when in their closed position.
a. In a closure device for bottles having enlarged head portions, a casing composed of separate parts movably connected, means when in their closed position.
5. In a lock device of the class described, a cup-shaped casing composed of separate parts hinged together, the lower edge portions of which are provided with an inwardly directed annular bead, means for locking'the separate parts together, and tensional means for opening the separate parts when unlocked.
6. In a lock device of the class described, a cup-shaped casing composed of separate parts hinged together, the lower edge portions of which are provided with an inwardly directed, annular bead, means for locking the separate parts together, and a device mounted on the hinge of the separate parts and adapted to limit the opening movement of said separate parts when unlocked.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 5th 1 day of June 1916.
WILLIAM L. MITCHELL.
