E.J.SNAPR MATCH SAFE.
APPLICATION FILED MM. 4, I916. 1,217,649. Patented Feb. 27,1917.

lNV NTOR WITNESSES WW Elmer J. Snapp ATTORNEY ELMER J. SNAPP, 0F STRASBURG, VIRGINIA.
MATCH-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 4, 1916. Serial No. 82,146.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ELMER J. SNArr, a
citizen of the United States," residing at Strasburg, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved match safe and'the principal object of the invention'is to provide a match safe having an improved delivery mechanism and to further provide a match safe having improved striking mechanism positioned with respect to the delivery mechanism so that as the match is conveyed from the reservoir to the delivery opening, it will pass across the striking surface and thus be lighted when delivered.
Another object of the invention is to provide the delivery cylinder with improved means for moving the match longitudinally of the same as the cylinder rotates to bring the match holding pocket into registry with the outlet opening, a cam strip being provided to guide the movement of the abutment pin positioned to engage the match in the match holding pocket of the cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of match receiving tray outside the delivery opening of the match safe, the tray being provided with a perforated bottom so that the match will remain lighted after being delivered upon the tra Another object of theinvention is to provide an improved type ofactuating mechanism for the shaft carrying the delivery cylinder, the actuating mechanism being yieldably held in one position by resilient means.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for agitating the matches in the reservoir or hopper to permit the matches to be shaken loose in case they should become jammed in the reservoir.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this match safe that a cigar cutter may be connected with the same and to further so construct the match safe, that the striking surface may be removed from the outside when necessary and either cleaned and put back in place or a new one put in place.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved match safe.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the match safe. 21
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but taken at right angles to the same.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken along the line 4 4L of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5.is a sectional view through the delivery cylinder. 1
F ig. S is a fragmentary perspective view showing the delivery cylinder and striking surface. I
This match safe includes a housing '10 which is supported by the feet 11 and is provided with an inner chamber 12, the upper chamber of which is divided by the plate or partition 13 to provide a hopper or reservoir 1% in which the matches 15 will be placed. A window 16 is provided so that it can be readily ascertained when it is necessary to refill the match safe and a cover 17 is hingedly connected with the receptacle or housing as shown at 18 and releasably held in a closed position by means of the hasp 19. Within this hopper 14 there is provided an agitating plate 20 which is formed of resilient material secured by the screws or other fasteners 21 and having its free end portion extending over the opening 22 so that the crank arm 23 of crank shaft 24: can engage the agitator strip or plate thus moving the plate when the crank shaft is rocked through the medium of handle or lever 25. A bracket 26 is provided to limit the movement of the lever handle 25 thus preventing this rocker shaft 24 from being rotated in either direction for too great anextent.
The delivery cylinder 27 is positioned in the chamber 12 beneath the hopper let and is rigidly mounted upon a shaft 28 which shaft extends through the wall of the receptacle lOinto the drum housin 29 mounted upon one side of the receptacle. A drum 30 is rigidly mounted upon this shaft with i in the drum housing 29 and is provided with a groove 31 to receive the strap or actuating line 32, the outer end of which is enlarged to provide a head 33 preventing the line from moving entirely into the housing Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
the rod 38.
when the drum is returned to its normal position by means of spring 34. This drum is further provided with an abutment shoulder 35 for engagement with the abutment lug or block 36 thus limiting the rotary movement of the drum and preventing the delivery cylinder 27 from being rotated in the chamber 12 beyond the desired point.
This delivery cylinder is provided with a longitudinally extending slot forming a pocket 37 in which there is positioned a rod 38 carrying a spring 89 which spring engages a bracket L0 slida'bly mounted upon This bracket t0 constitutes a finger for moving a match longitudinally in the pocket to bring its striking head into engagement with the striking surface ll and engages a cam strip L2 which extends as shownin Fig. 3 so that the movement of the latch in the pocket 37 will be gradual and the head of the match brought into engagement with the striking surface A1 at the proper time and with the proper amount of pressure. As this match is drawn across the striking surface the match will be ignited and the lighted match will then be moved through the outlet opening orslot 43 onto the perforated bottom of the tray ia. Upon releasing the actuating line 33, the spring 34 will rotate the drum 30 in the opposite direction thus winding the line upon the drum and returning the delivery cylinder to the normal position.
The operation of this match safe is as follows The matches are placed in the hopper as thus rotating the delivery cylinder in the opposite direction. As this delivery cylinder rotates, the spring 89 draws the bracket along the rod 38 and the match is moved toward the striking surface across which it passes thus igniting the match. Upon reaching the outlet slot 43, the match will be forced through the same into the pan. This striking surface 41 is preferably in the form of a piece of roughened metal set in a recess 45 and releasably held in place by the slide 46. A cigar cutter L7 is connected with the front wall of this match safe so that cigars may be cut and includes a drawer A8 to receive the ends of the cigars which are cut off.
