Description

0f Eig. 2.

CHARLES LAVIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MARCEL WAVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114,349..
To all whom zt may concern.' i
Be it known that I, CHARLES LAVIE, a citi- Zen of the Republic of France, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of N ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Marcel lVavei-s, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in implements for improving the appearance of womens hair and relates to` that type of apparatus used in producing the so-called Marcel wave.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a light, easily operated implement upon which the hair may be intertwined, the same being afterward so treated that the undulations impartedv to the hair aie given perinanency.
A further object is to provide such imple-g ments in forms whereby a plurality of locks of hair may be operated upon simultaneously and without confliction one with the other.
These and other objects are attained by the novel design and construction hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which f Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention.
vFig. 2 is a perspective view showing the implement in detail. Fig. 3 is a similar perspective view indicating the manner in which the hair is entwined upon the instrument.
Fig. l is a partial plan taken on line -l--f Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. G is a simi-lar transverse sectional view .taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
1 Fig. 7 is a transverse view of one of the prongs taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 8 is a cross Sectional view taken on une s-s of Eig. 2. U f
The implement consists essentially of a light metal instrument, preferably of alufornied with a handle 11, the latter having concave narrow side edges 12 and'terininat ing in "a widened element 14, the outer edge l5 of which is finished VVconcavely.
I A t the front of the instrument a tooth or prong 1G is formed, the same having a flattened inner edge 17 and joined to the center web 10, while directly opposite to the prong 1G, is a similar but longer prong 18.
elliptical; the prongs 18 and 20 are of cylindrical cross section, tapering slightly outward at their extreinities,. forming in effect inverted cones about which the hair is lisposed as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In operation, a lock, tuft, or tress of hair, close to the scalp, is secured to the prong 16, by a cord passed through the slot 25, woven about the first prong 1S, curved over the central rib 10, coiled once aboutthe rst succeedingprong 20', A returned to the opposite side of the second prong, and so continued until the handle is reached, any excess length being turned over the extreme end 15 and secured by a band Q3, a similar fastening be ing used to tie the hair close tothe scalp, the fastening passing through the slot 25, in the prong 16. l
lVhen the several locks of hair are engaged with the prongs, the hair is moistened with a certain solution and incased in La paper tube 28, ladapted to be inserted in an electrical heater Q9, connected by wires 30 with some source of electric energy.
The hair is subjected to a moderately high temperature for a short period, as froiii ten to fifteen minutes, whereupon the heater is removed, the tube withdrawn and the hair loosened from the implement, it thenhaving acquired av particular wavy condition known asthe, Marcel-wave7 and will remain in such /condition irrespective of' washing, shampooing, or. other treatment, including brushing and combing, for a period of several months withoutbecoming straight. y
As all the edges of the instrument are smoothly rounded and no sharp bend given the hair the implement maybe used with entire safety, and without detriment to the hair or scalp.
Having thus described my invention,`to
application and use what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an implement ofthe class described, the combination with a handle having its sidevand rear edges formed concavely, of -a thin sinuous web having an elliptical cross section formed with said handle, and a plus rality of inverted conical projections extending from said web upon'opposite sides, unifrom said web alternating with the spaces formly spaced and so disposed that the probetween said projections, and a projection of jections on one side are directly opposite the lesser length formed directly opposite the spaces between the projections on the other outermost projection on the rib, said short 5 side. l projection having an enlarged head slotted i5 2. In an implement of the class described, longitudinally and adapted to have hair the combination With a flat handle having a strands secured therein. x concavely formed rear end, a thin sinuous In testimony whereof I have vsigned my Web extending from said handle, inverted name to this specification.
l0 conical projections extending oppositely CHARLES LAVIE.
