Specification of Letters Patent.

' Patented Mar. *7, 1922.
Application filed September 6, 1821. Serial No. 498,749..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON F. NASH, a citizen of the Unitedstates, residing at .San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Marcel Flavors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hair curlers for curling and producing marcel waves in the hair.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, simple and effective waver which may be easily, quickly and effectively operated and which will not prove uncomfortable to the user nor cut, break or injure the hair.
The invention possesses other advantages and features some of which, with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of the construction of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form since the invention as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the curler as it would appear when ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the curler showing it in second position of its use.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing it in full position.
Fig. 4 is a top plan View showing the curler after the operation of fixing the same has been completed.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of the buttons or washers.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the curler as bent to conform to the shape of the head.
Referring particularly to the drawings, the embodiment of the invention illustrated therein, comprises essentially a single strand of suitable bendable wire 1, preferably copper, having a tubular soft rubber casing or covering 2, the strand being approximately one foot in length. This strand is doubled to provide two arms 3 and l, each approximately six inches in length. lVasher- like buttons 5 and 6, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4-, the buttons being annular in form and of soft rubber are adapted to be mounted upon the arms 3 and f and it will thus be seen that the curler comprises only three elements, vlzz' the flslngle strand of rubber coated, flexible wire and the two rubbeivbuttons.
Operation: The strands or locks of hair to be curled or waved are placed between the arms 2 and 3 and the curler is moved so that the end thereof where the arms are joined is brought close to the scalp with the strand engaged against the portion joining said arms and between said arms, as shown in Fig. 2. The arms 2 and, 3 are then brought close together, as shown in Fig. 2 and the button 5 is mounted upon the arms and moved into position shown in Fig. 2, so as to engage the strand or lock of hair within the loop or eye formed at the closed end of the curler and in this way the curler is held in position upon the head. The hair is then wound around the arms 2 and 3 as shown in Fig. 2, and the hair should be twisted while being thus wound around the arms. After winding suflicient hair around the arms the second button 6 is placed over the ends of the arms and pushed inwardly to engage and hold the hair wound thereon.
The free ends of the arms are then bent back upon the body, as shown in Fig. 4, so that they will engage the hair wound 011 the arms and hold the hair firmly in place on the curler. The entire device including the buttons is compressible and readily bendable, the rubber coated wire and buttons being very soft whereupon comfort to the user is assured and all possibility of breaking or cutting the hair is eliminated. Because of the flexibility of the device, it may be bent to conform to the contour of the headafter being affixed, thus preventing the curlers from pressing a hard point into the scalp and causing discomfort. to the user.
I claim:
1. A. hair waver comprising bendable arms joined to one another at certain ends and being free at their other ends, a member adapted to be mounted upon said arms after being inserted between the arms, a
button slidable uponthe arms to engage the member said hair is adapted to be wound, a a button movable-upon sald member to engage the hair wound thereon and bendable terminal portions on said member adapted to be bent over said button so as to engage the wound hair.
4:. A hair waver comprising a member doubled to form arms adapted to receive. a look of hair therebetween and around which the hair is wound after being inserted, a
button mounted upon the arms to engage the hair wound thereon and over which terminal portions of said arms are bendable to engage the wound hail.
HARMON r. NASH.
