Description

.l. D. MORRIS.
SNOW PLOW.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11. 1915.
1,2 1 4.,9Q2 Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY 1 environ JOHN D. MORRIS, 0F WAYNESBORO, VIRGINIA.
SNOW-PLOW.
To all to 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll' aynesboro, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow'Plows, of which the following is a specification.
lny invention relates to track cleaners and more particularly to a snow plow, the invention having for its primary object the provision of a snow plow which will not clog or bank up the snow when pushing the same from the right of way.
Another object of the invention is to provide a snow plow which consists of a plurality of superposed blades which successively, from the topof the drift downwardly, remove the snow, deflecting the snow to both sides of the railway track.
A further object of the invention is to provide a snow plow which will deflect snow to the sides of the railway track and not allow the same to fall back on said track.
With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the snow plow embodying the improvements of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a front end elevational view of the same.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawing.
In the drawing, a. railway track is shown and designated 1, my invention embodying a frame 2 mounted on wheels 3 adapted to run upon the rails 1. The frame 2 is provided on its rear end with a coupling of any desired type designated 4.
The top of the frame 2 is inclined forwardly and downwardly to support a plurality of superposed inclined blades 5, 6 and 7. A dividing wall or partition 8 extends throughout the length of said blades and is mounted in the longitudinal axes thereof. The front extremities of said blades terminate successively short of one another, the uppermost blade being foremost in operation so as to remove the top of the drift of snow. The rear extremities of said blades are curved upwardly toward their Specification of Letters Patent.

centers as indicated 9, l0 and 11, respect vely. This will serve to deflect snow to either side of the track and also prevent its falling upon said track behind the plow and in front of the pushing locomotive. Particular attention is directed to the arrangement of the forward ends of the blades, it being noted that the forward end of the partition 8 is inclined as at 12 to facilitate cutting through the snow.
In use, a locomotive may be coupled to the rear end of the plow and the latterrun at a drift. As the plow enters the drift, the uppermost blade, in this instance, the blade 7, will remove a layer of snow from the drift. Immediately thereafter, the blade 6 will begin to act at a point lower down and following the blade 6, the blade 5 will remove the remaining snow upon the rails. The three layers of snow, it being understood that I am not limited to any number of blades, will be delivered at the rear end of the plow, the curved surfaces 9, l0 and 11 deflecting the snow to both sides of the railway track.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be readily gathered and while I have shown and described the same as embodying a specific structure, I reserve the right to make changes therein which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim- 1. A snow plow, including a frame mounted on wheels, a. plurality of superposed parallel spaced blades carried in an inclined position on said frame, the front extremities of each said blades being shorter than the adjacent to allow the uppermost thereof to remove a layer of snow in advance of the intermediate and lowermost blades, a vertically disposed partition arranged intermediate the blades and extending throughout the length thereof, and the rear extremities of said blades being curved upwardly toward their respective centers into engagement with a portion of the partition to form an abutment for the snow and to deflect the same outwardly on both sides of the plow.
2. A snow plow, including a wheeled frame, a plurality of superposed parallel abutment for the snow a length thereof, and the rear extremities of said blades being curved upwardly toward their respective centers into engagement with a portion of said partition to form an for causing the same Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0."
to be deflected outwardly on both sides of 10 JOHN D. MORRIS.
