UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. COLLINS, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY. l
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMP-CARTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,086, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. COLLINS, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dump-Carts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
Figure l represents a side elevation; Fig. 2, a horizontal section. Fig. 4 is a detail.
My invention consists in providing the front of a cart-body With a metallic strap or bar, eX- tending horizontally from one sill to the other, and held in position by a spring, one end of which is secured `to the body and the other operates against the bar, thus constituting an automatic fastening.
The following is a more exact description of my invention: A in Fig. l represents the body of 'a cart fastened to the shaft B. G in Fig. 2 is the metallic strap or bar, slightly curved at each end in order to constitute a convenient handle, and pivoted in the center to the middle sill of the body. D is the spring, secured firmly to the cart-body at one end, and pressing against the bar at the other, so that the bar will be held in the catches e e. These catches are permanently attached to each shaft, and are formed like the figure 4, the one being the reverse of the other. f f are the front ends of the sills, and are slotted so as to admit the catches e e, as shown in Fig. 3.
By this arrangement, when the cart is unloaded, by simply tilting the 4rear portion of the body the bar will strike the catches e e and the spring forces it immediately to its position, thus forming an automatic fastening.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The strap or bar C, spring D, and reversed catches e e, when arranged and constructed as described, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE L. COLLINS. Witnesses:
