To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM G. Nono, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawers for Cigarette-Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to drawers for cigarette dispensers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of the invention is toprovide a drawer which is designed for use in conjunction with a receptacle adapted to contain cigarettes with means mounted upon the said receptacle for grasping a single cigarette and presenting the same in a position from which it may be readily removed from the said means.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the dispenser with parts removed and parts in section and having the drawer applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, showing the parts in one position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in another position. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal sectional View of part of the dispenser and the drawer.

The cigarette dispenser to which the drawer is applied comprises a casing 1 which may be ofwood or other suitable material, and which is provided at its top with a removable panel 2 and a hinged panel 3. A drawer 4 is slidably mounted at the back of the casing 1 and is provided at its side with a spring tongue 5. Springs 6 are mounted within the casing 1 and a follower 7 is connected with one end of the said springs. The follower 7 lies in the path of movement of the drawer 4 when the same is pushed in or closed with relation to the casing 1, and when the said drawer! is in a closed position in the said casing, the springs 6 are compressed. A lever 8 is pivotally mounted in the casing 1, and a spring 9 is disposed under one end of the said lever and engages the same. The said spring 9 is under tension with a tendency to hold that end of the lever with which it is in engagement in an elevated position, whereby the other end of the lever 8 is held in the path of movement of the tongue 5;

When that end portion of the lever 8 with which the spring 9 is in engagement, is depressed the other end of the said lever 8 is carried above the end of the tongue 5, consequently the drawer 4 is released and under the influence of the springs 6 and follower 7 the drawer 4 is moved to an open position. The drawer 4 is adapted to contain matches, and when it is opened they may be removed therefrom. 1

A plate 10 is located at the inner surface of the back of the casing 1 and the lower edge of the said plate projects into the path of movement of the inner side of the drawer 4, whereby the outward sliding movement of the said drawer is limited as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A vertically disposed shaft 11 is movably mounted in the top of the casing 1 and the lower end of thesaid shaft 11 is normally held spaced above one end of the lever 8. The shaft 11 is normally held in elevated position by a spring 12 which connects at its upper end with the said shaft 11 and which is positioned in a guide 13 located within the casing 1. The lower end of the spring 12 bears against the lower portion of the guide.

When the shaft 11 is depressed, the lower end thereof comes into contact with one end of the lever 8, and swings the said lever against the tension of the spring 9 and the other end of the said lever is moved above the end of the tongue 5, whereby the drawer 4 is released as hereinbefore described. When the drawer 4 is moved to a closed position in the casing 1 the spring tongue 5 wipes or brushes along the end of the lever 8, and when the tongue moves beyond the end of the lever 8, it springs out into position against the side of the end of the said lever as shown in Fig. 7.

A cigarette receptacle is located within the casing 1 and the said receptacle comprises end walls 14 and a back wall 15. The

receptacle is further provided with an inclined bottom 16. which is downwardly and forwardly disposed from the back wall 15. An apron 17 is pivotally mounted at the forward portion of the receptacle between the walls 14 thereof, and constitutes the forward side of the receptacle. Operating means indicated at 18 is connected with one end of the apron l7 and is disposed along the outer surface of one of the Walls 1% as best shown in Fig. l. Said means is also connected to the shaft 11. When the said shaftll is depressed the means 18 is moved and the apron 17 is swung from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The receptacle of which the walls 14 and 15 are components is adapted to contain a number of cigarettes, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and when the apron 17 is moved in an inward direction as just described, the lower edge of the apron clears and passes over the lowermost cigarette, but engages the next cigarette above and pushes all of the cigarettes except the lowermost one up and back in the receptacle toward the rear wall 15.

Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a casing, a spring pressed drawer 'slidably mounted therein, a spring tongue mounted at the side of the drawer, a spring pressed locking lever pivoted in the casing for swinging movement transversely of the tongue, said tongue and said lever having end portions which extend into each others path of movement, and a shaft movably mounted in the casing and adapted to engage the lever to swing the same.
