To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAILEY BOOTH and JOHN J. DOUGLAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monkey-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of monkey wrenches.
An object of the invention is to produce a monkey wrench wherein the movable jaw will be automatically brought toward the stationary jaw of the wrench by the operation of a pressure member which actuates a dog that is normally forced into engagement with the teeth of a rack bar arranged upon the side of a wrench, the said engagement between the dog and rack bar serving to hold the jaws in proper spaced relation with each other until actuated by the said push member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench including a slidable jaw having its shank received in the socket in the shank or handle of the stationary jaw, to arrange a spring between the shank of the movable jaw and the handle. whereby the movable jaw will be forced toward the stationary jaw, to arrange the spring pressed dog in a suitable notch or pocket in the shank of the movable jaw, to provide the said dog with an operating button which extends through an elongated slot in the handle, and to provide the handle with a removable side having its inner face formed with a toothed rack which is normally engaged by the dog.
A further object of the invention is to produce a monkey wrench having spring means for sliding the movable jaw in the direction of the stationary jaw, to provide means for locking the jaws in the desired spaced relation with each other, and to also provide means for regulating the tension of the spring.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section approximately 011 the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The wrench includes a movable jaw 2 having an integral angular shank 3 and a stationary jaw at, which is integrally formed on one end with a shank or handle 5. The handle 5 from the end thereof formed with the jaw a is provided with a substantially rectangular socket 6 within which is snugly received the shank 3 of the jaw 2. One side of the handle 5 is provided with a longitudinally extending plate 7 which is adapted to close one side of the rectangular socket 6. This plate has its opposite ends reduced to provide the same with what we shall term tongues 8 and 9 respectively, and the tongue 8 is adapted to be received in a transverse slot forming a pocket 10 at the outer end wall, and the tongue 9 is likewise received in a depression 11 formed in a line with the opening and at the inner end wall of the socket 6.
The numeral 12 designates a turning member having an eccentrically arranged head 13, and this head when the member 12 is rotated in one direction is adapted to partially overlie the depression 11 and as a con* sequence engage with the tongue 9 of the plate 7 to hold the plate upon the handle of the wrench. The side or face of the plate 7 which is exposed to the socket 6 is formed with a series of longitudinally arranged transversely extending rack teeth 14.
The shank 3 adjacent the inner end thereof is formed with a substantially rectangular depression 15, a transverse pin 16 bridging the pocket and serving as a bearing for a dog 17 This dog at its toothed or engaging end is contacted by one of the members of a two-arm spring 18 which is snugly received in the depression 15 and which, of course, swings the dog upon its pivot pin 16 to bring its teeth to engage between the teeth 14.. The opposite end of the dog is bifurcated and receives the reduced end of a push member 19, the said end being pivoted to the said dog and the push member has its free end arranged in an elongated slot 20 in the side of the handle opposite that provided with the plate 7. v
The end of the shank 3 has secured thereon the end convolution of a helical spring 21, the said spring being received in a longitudinally arranged channel 22 formed in the handle and communicating with the socket 6, and this channel has its walls preferably threaded, as at 23, to receive a threaded member 24 which has a swivel connection with the outer end of the spring 21, and by adjusting the member 24 longitudinally of the handle it will be noted that the tension of the spring 21 may be regulated.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
p A wrench comprising a stationary jaw having an integrally formed shank, said shank having a longitudinally extending slot formed therein, a toothed plate closing one H a side of the slot, a handle formed on the 15 shank and having a longitudinally extendin'g threaded bore formed therein and communicating with the slot, a movable jaw having a shank slidably mounted within the said slot, said last mentioned shank having a recess formed on its inner end, a spring DAILEY BOOTH.
