TABLE-LAMP ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed February 9, 1916. Serial No. 77,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. Cmrrono, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Weehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Table-Lamp Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a table lamp attachment whereby the lamp can be applied to a vase which forms the base or support for the lamp.
The invention has for its general objects to provide an attachment of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use, andso designed as to be adaptable to vases having necks of difi'erent sizes.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a plurality of spring gripping members which are adjustably fastened under the bottom or base of the lamp and are adapted to extend into the neck of the vase to thereby tightly hold the lamp attached to the same, the whole attachment being of such a nature that it can be applied to table lamps of ordinary construction.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reaerence indicate corresponding parts in both the views, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a table lamp with the attachment applied thereto and holding the lamp attached to the neck of a vase; and Fig. 2 is a view of the bottom of the table lamp with the attachment applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing, the table lamp A is applied to and held in place on a neck 1 of a vase or similar receptacle B by means of the attachment 0 which is fastened to the base of the lamp. The lamp, which is of the usual construction, comprises a hollow or chambered base 2, a stem or pipe 3, a head 4 on the upper end of the stem, sockets 5 carried by the head, lamp 6 in the socket, and a suitable shade 7, the electric lamps being supplied with current through circuit wires 8 which pass upwardly through, the base 2, stem 3, head 4: to the sockets 5.
The attachment C embodies a plurality of spring gripping or holding devices 9 which have vertically disposed resilient .60 members 10 and horizontal attaching members 11, so that each device 9 is of L-shaped form. The upper members 11 are radially' disposed and they overlap at their inner ends, each having a longitudinal slot 12, sothat when the members 9 are in proper posi-- tion the slots will transecteach other to receive a clamping screw 13 at the point of intersection, the screw 13 screwing into a hickey 14. The outer portions of the members 11 are braced by passing through guides formed by oppositely disposed lugs 15 on the periphery of an annular bracket member 16, such member having an upwardly-extending hollow boss 17 to form a chamber in which the hickey 14 is disposed. The guide lugs 15 provide for a sliding connection between the members 9 and the bracket member 16, so that the members 9 can be moved inwardly or outwardly to adapt the attachment to vases having necks of different diameters. The boss 17 has an inwardly extending flange 18 which engages under the central portion of the base 2 and over the hickey 14, which latter has a threaded nipple portion 19 which screws into the stem 3. Thus, by screwing the hickey in place the parts 2, 3 and 16 are clamped together. The hickey has openings at opposite sides for admitting the wires 8. The gripping devices 9 are clamped in adjusted position by the head of the screw 13 engaging the lowermost member 11 and the uppermost member engaging the bottom of the hickey.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand. desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a lamp base, a stem fastened thereto, a hickey having 100 threaded connection with the stem, a bracket disposed under the base and clamped between the latter and hickey, attaching members adjustably mounted on the bracket, and a fastener clamping the members to the 105 hickey in different positions of adjustment.
2. The combination of a lamp base, a hickey, a bracket having a hollow boss in which the hickey is disposed, the boss being provided with an internal flange clamped 110 between the hickey and base, L-shaped attaching members guided on the bracket, and a fastener common to all the members and clamping the same to the hiekey.
3. The combination of a lamp base, a hickey, a bracket having a hollow boss in which the hickey is disposed, the boss being provided with an internal flange clamped between the hickey and base, L-shaped attaching members guided on the bracket, said members having overlapping slotted portions with their slots intersecting, and a fastener passing through the slots and connected with the hickey for clamping the members in different positions of adjustment.
4. The combination of a table lamp base, an annular bracket disposed in the base and having at its periphery radially disposed guides, a hickey for clamping the bracket to the base, L-shaped attaching members having horizontal slotted portions movable in the guides, the slots of the members intersecting at a point under the said hickey, and a screw extending through the slots in the members and screwing into the said hickey for clamping the members in difierent positions of adjustment.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tb specification in the presence of" two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. CLIFFORD.
