Description
Dec. 27, 1955 w. N. DE SHERBININ LAMP ADAPTERS Filed Dec. 29 195] ATTORNEY R 0 T m V m United States Patent LAMP ADAPTERS William N. de Sherbinin, Brookfield, Conn.
Application December 29, 1951, Serial No. 264,151
1 Claim. (Cl. 240-98) This invention relates to lighting and more particularly pertains to lamps of the type which has a translucent chimney surrounding the light producing means.
The invention provides glass chimney supporting devices for use with electric or oil lamps which are capable of mounting a plurality of different sizes of chimneys rather than only a single size as has been customary heretofore. These supporting devices are simple and eifective for the intended purpose and are economical to produce.
The invention will be understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a lamp having chimney supporting device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, but on an enlarged scale, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the chimney supporting device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Like characters of reference designate the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, the chimney supporting device embodying the invention, is illustrated as applied directly to an electric light socket. A vase 42, providing the base of the lamp, has an electric light socket 43 aflixed in the neck of the vase by any suitable means which includes the cap 44. The socket switch is actuated by a thumb turn 45 and an electric light bulb 46 is threaded into the socket. The chimney supporting device includes a ring 47 having a central threaded portion 48 which is screwed on the upper end of the socket 43 as shown in Fig. 2, and a plurality of supporting brackets 49, four as shown, equidistantly spaced about, and secured to, the ring 47. Each bracket 49 is substantially U-shaped, with legs 50 and 51 and a connecting portion 52. The upper end of leg 50 has a laterally extending flange 53 which is secured to the upper face of the ring 47 by any suitable means, such as spot welding, brazing, or the like, and serves to attach the bracket to the ring. Leg 51 and base 52 have a finger 54 struck out of the central parts thereof, and this finger is bent upwardly from the base 52 to a position between the two legs 50 and 51. The upper end per- 'ice tions of leg 51 and finger 54 are curved in opposite directions, and the upper end portion of leg 51 is provided with apertures 55. The brackets 49 preferably are made of resilient metal, and the legs 51 and fingers 54 are inclined toward each other, as shown, to provide a firmer grip on the chimney with which they come in contact. A chimney 56 of large size is engaged by the inner surfaces of the legs 51 of the brackets 49, and a chimney of intermediate size, indicated at 57, is engaged by the inner surfaces of the fingers 54. At the right of Fig. 2, the positions of the lower ends of the chimneys with respect to the legs 51 and fingers 54 is shown, prior to the chimneys being moved downwardly into the brackets.
Obviously, in any instance where a chimney is engaged by the chimney supporting device on the inside or the outside of the chimney, the chimney engaging means can be disposed to contact the chimney on the opposite side of the chimney without departing from the invention.
It will be understood that a preferred form of the invention has been selected for illustration and description, but that changes can be made in the form, location and relative arrangement of the several parts of the form without departing from the principles of the invention, in consequence of which the invention is not to be limited excepting by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An adapter for a lamp having an electric light socket, a lamp bulb in the socket, and a translucent chimney sur rounding the bulb, comprising a ring, a series of U- shaped supporting brackets fastened to said ring, each supporting bracket having a flange attached to said ring and bent downwardly at approximately right angles to said ring to form one leg of the U-shaped supporting bracket, the other leg of said U-shaped supporting bracket being bent upward in substantially parallel relation to said first leg to engage a chimney to be placed around said bulb by engaging said chimney on its outside, and fingers formed out of said second leg and out of part of the base of the connecting U-portion of said U-shaped supporting bracket and being bent backward and upward to form a resilient element to engage a chimney of another size when used, whereby chimneys of difierent sizes can be used and be engaged by either of said second legs or by said fingers.
