The two lid portions 10 und 14. have These hand-holes register with each other when the two lid portions are folded to olosed i ositions, and afford access to the contents o the carton so that said eontents .may be removed without opening either of the lids.
Fig. 5 shows a display7 shutter intended for use by o :retail dealer, and ig. 6 shows an opaque shutter intended to beapplied by vthe packer .to cover the hand holes until the eerton is yopened by the'reteil dealer. The display shutter .(Fi'. 5) comprises a frame 2s?, sind a panel 25 of transparent materiel suoli as glass or Celluloid. The packing shutter 6)' consists of a sheet 26 et inexpensive material suoli as cardboard. @ne or more shutters' 26 may be placed on top oi lid 10, or muy be placed between lids 10 and 14, when the carton is wrapped. flissuining that the carton had been. packed and lid portion .lei folded to closed position as shown by-llig. 3. the next step would be to fold down lid portion 10 and insert tabs 16 into the slits l'. The carton could then he inclosed in u sheet of thin wrapping peper, indicated conventionally by dotted line A in Fig. l', pasted upon it to seul lid portion 10 and, to seal also the cracks and slits through which dust and moisture 2night otherwise enter.
Edges m of iiaps 18 and edges o of flaps 2i) occupy a higher plane than edges la of laps 19 when all the said flaps are in operative position. This relation of the edees is. shown by Fig. e and is u Fig. 2 so far as edges mand le are concerned. Conseruiently-7 when lid portion 10 is folded down over the lid portion les shown hv Fig. 4, lid portion 10 will be supported by edges m and 'o above and independently oi the shutter that may loe resting upon lid .portion 1li. Lid portion l/i beingA thus supported in one plane by flaps 19, 19, and lid porsupported in a higher plane by Flaps 18 and 20, insures a suitable spae. between the two lid portions for the shding shutter to be moved edgewise without being pinched or otherwise cramped between the two lid portions.
Assuming` that the packed cartons are sealed in wrapping paper pasted thereon :is herembefore mentioned, and that each carton is provided with an opaque shutter 2G. the retail dealer having a stock of display also shown by messes shutters such :is that shown by Fig. 5 would prepare :i Corton for display as follows:- The sealiiig'wrupper could be out or scored with e knife around the outline of lid portion 10, and the out piene could be removed. The pzielzers shutter 26 could then be removed and the displayA shutter shown by Fig. 5 eould be inserted between the lids 10 and 'le as shown by Fig. 4. The panel of transportant material in the display would nevertheless be amply supported becauso the lid portion 10 is firmly locked hy tabs 1U and would not be pried. upwardly by the weight of the outstanding portion of 'the shutter.
lt is intended that the retail dealer will keep the display shutters but will throw euch Carton into the waste as it is emptied, the cost of the cartons being less than the cost of returning them to the packer in suit- -able condition for second use.
I claim: 1. A carton consisting of a -folding blank and comprising a rectangular bottom, six opstanding walls, and two lids, four of said walls being arranged to form :i rectangular inelosure and the two others being arranged in contiguous relation to the inner faces of two opposite walls o1 said four walls, where by such inclosure is provided with two opposed double walls and two opposed single walls, the upper edges oi the outer members of said double walls being higher than the upper edg of the inner members thereof, said' lids adjoining the upper edges of Suid two single walls respectively, one of said lids being arranged to rest upon said upper edges ot said inner members and having lups between said inner members and said outer inon'iliors, und the other one of said lids being arranged. to rest upon said upper edges of said outer inen'ibors und having flaps lying against the outer faces of Suid outer inen'ibers. said lids luwing holes in registration 'with each other.
Q. ,.'i folding;Y blank adapted to form a carton, and comprising live wall-forming seotions arranger in a series, wall-formingwdioiniiile the side marginal portions of the second. third and fourth of said sections,' und retaining flaps adjoining the side marm ginal poitions of the first und lifth said seetions, said iii-st and fifth sections being flaps;
adapted to fold, one over the other, to'form a double lid, and having hand holes adapted to register with each other, 'said blank hav" third section being shorter than the other,
said Wall-forming flaps that adjoin said third section being of the same length as said shorter section to sustain the lid .section that adjoins the'latter, said flaps that adjoin said second and fourth sections having coperatve tabs and slits adapted to be interlocked to sustain said second and fourth sections in parallel confronting relation, and
to sustain said flaps of said third section inl parallel confronting relation, two or more of said interlocking ,iaps having edges ar#` ranged to sustain the outer lid section apart 20 from the inner lid section to provide a space4 between said lid sections, said flaps that adi join the outer lid section, and two or more` of said interlocking fiaps, having copera.` 1 "tive tabs and slits adapted to be interlockedV 35 with each other to hold said outer lid secn tion in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed myx signature.
